Some potential truck buyers might take the whole “Made in the USA” thing very seriously. Whatever the reason, these are the most American-made trucks you can buy for 2022. The Kogod School of Business uses seven criteria to determine how much U.S./Canadian content is used for each build. One pickup truck stood out with its domestic-sourced transmission, engine, and other body parts.

The American-made truck for 2022 is the Chevrolet Colorado

Kogod School of Business Made in America Auto Index

There was only one other pickup truck on the list for 2022, the Honda Ridgeline. Honda’s pickup truck came in with 70% American-made parts.

How does Kogod determine the most American-made trucks?

There were a lot of changes this year in how automakers sourced parts. Domestic manufacturers held firm but have been sourcing supplies from Mexico, which dropped the U.S./Canadian content. How does this study determine that? Kogod uses seven criteria to determine which vehicles have the most content from the U.S. and Canada.

Those criteria are profit margin, labor, research and development (R&D), inventory/capital, engine, transmission, and body/chassis/electrical components. Trucks gain or lose points based on its U.S. parts and assembly. Chevy’s Colorado pickup truck came in at 61% of parts from the U.S. and Canada, which was enough to put it fourth on the list.

Even though G.M. had the most American-made truck, the brand lost six points overall between 2021 and 2022. Ford’s score went down from 65 to 60.5, and Honda’s increased from 50 to 57.

G.M. builds the Chevrolet Colorado in Missouri

Chevrolet builds the Colorado at the Wentzville, Missouri, assembly facility. That likely won’t change anytime soon. If finding an American-made pickup truck with a lot of domestic parts, the Colorado is your next truck.

In the top 25, there are more American-made trucks on the list. The Chevy Silverado 4WD 3.0L T.D. and LTD RST 6.2L V-8 have 42% U.S./Canadian content. In the end, there are many more sport utility vehicles on the list than anything else. Since American drivers seem to prefer the SUV over anything else, it makes sense manufacturers would have plenty to offer.

The semiconductor chip shortage has had a major impact on vehicle production; this list proves that. For 2023, there is a good chance this list will change even more. For now, Chevrolet remains on top for the most American-made trucks.
