health, technology, dangers of technology, health dangers

Technology has become a huge part of our daily lives in the modern world. Like all things, it has its pros and cons. Advancements are made to make life easier yet sometimes, it actually causes harm instead. Here are the dangers of technology you should try to avoid.

Screen Time Lessens Sleep Time

If you think it’s because you’re too distracted to fall asleep, then you’re partly right. However, according to Medical News Today, there are scientific aspects to spending so much time in front of a screen as well.

Blue light is emitted from the devices you use like cell phones and computers. This could disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm which makes it harder to fall asleep. It’s best to set down your gadgets an hour before you head to bed.

Running a Program Does Not Count as Running

Technology does not require a lot of movement. We often just sit and stare at the screen for hours at a time. This leads to people having reduced physical activity, which has physical health implications in the long run.

The negative effects of a prolonged sedentary lifestyle could lead to obesity, cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes, and even premature death. Go out there and touch some grass from time to time. It’ll do you some good.

Your Eyes Need to Rest

Have you ever noticed how your eyes feel heavy after a long session of scrolling through social media? That’s because you probably have eyestrain. It’s not just the eyes that will be affected if your screen time habits continue.

Over time, the pain will start spreading to your head, neck, and shoulders. If you can’t keep yourself away from technology, at least fix your posture, don’t watch too closely at the screen, and adjust the brightness so it wouldn’t strain your eyes so much.

Anonymity Provides Bravery

When you’re hiding behind a screen, it’s so much easier to not think about the consequences of what you say. You could be the receiving end of this bravery in the form of cyberbullying. Worse, you can even end up one yourself. This issue has been the cause of many psychological issues in younger generations today.

Authenticity is Rare in Social Media

Of course, no one would want to share the ugly side of their lives on social media if they have it. Most of the time, the photos you see are made to look as good as possible, if not scripted. This could make some think that others have it better than them.

This may lead to self-doubt, jealousy, and even depression for not being able to measure up. People often forget the fact that others post to impress, and that only the best parts of their lives are usually shown in public.

No Thumbs Up For You

When we’re immersed in social media, we may not move much, but our thumbs do all the work. All that scrolling, tapping, and typing may actually cause tendonitis or “phone thumb” as Digital Detox mentioned. It could become a persistent condition if you do this frequently.

Sit Up Straight Before You Hurt Yourself

When looking at your phone, you may not notice that you’re already hunched over. Bad posture can lead to a lot of painful muscles, not to mention musculoskeletal issues. There will be some pressure put on your back or neck when you have incorrect posture, and that’s not something you’ll want when you get older.
