8 best hammock underquilts for staying warm

For most people, the idea of camping conjures up images of sleeping in a tent. Tent camping is by far the most popular option, whether you're driving to your campsite or hiking to it. But for backpackers—people who hike deep into the woods and set up camp in areas with no amenities—tents can be bulky and heavy to haul and create too much of a barrier between them and nature.

For those campers, a hammock sleeping setup may be the answer. Hammocks can weigh well under a pound and fold up smaller than a water bottle. And sleeping in a hammock can be a great way to get off the ground while still feeling like you're truly in nature.

But without a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad, how do you stay warm? That’s where hammock quilts (or “underquilts”) come in. Hammock underquilts are insulated blankets that attach to the outside of your hammock to create a barrier between the cold air and your body heat. They almost always attach to your hammock, so you don’t need to carry extra straps.

There’s not much to these cozy quilts, but there are a few things you should know before making a purchase. Here’s what to take into consideration when shopping for a hammock underquilt.

What to Consider

There are only a few factors that matter with hammock quilts: cost, weight, level of warmth (or temperature rating), and size. These are the same factors that go into choosing a sleeping bag, but if the idea is to have a lighter pack than you would with tent camping, you’ll want a quilt that’s lighter than the average sleeping bag. I like to keep them under 2 pounds, which you can do by opting for a lighter level of insulation, choosing down instead of a synthetic fill, or going with a tapered quilt that narrows at your feet.

The temperature rating you’ll want depends on your normal camping conditions, but remember that most ratings are for adult men, and, in general, women and children get colder faster. The temperature rating also assumes you’re sleeping in an insulative layer and a beanie. I always like to choose a temperature rating at least 10 degrees cooler than I think it will be outside.

Finally, consider packed size. As a general rule, the lower the temperature rating, the larger the packed hammock underquilt will be (since it’s likely less insulated). You can find quilts that are both rated for freezing temperatures and pack down very small, but they’ll usually be more expensive.

How We Selected

As a travel writer and gear tester who frequently camps in California’s Sierra Nevada, where summer temps can dip as low as 15 degrees F in the higher elevations, I’ve become a pro at selecting the best gear to balance weight, cost, and warmth—and I like to be very warm when sleeping. The hammock underquilts listed below all score highly in those categories and are well-loved by online reviewers and outdoor explorers.

Eagles Nest Outfitters Blaze UnderQuilt

Key Specs

Warmth Rating: 30º FCompressed Size: Approx. 16 x 7 in.Weight: 24 oz.

Aside from the price tag, there’s not much to dislike about the Blaze UnderQuilt. It’s rated for 30-degree F weather, weighs in at a very reasonable one-and-a-half pounds, and stuffs into a 10-liter compression sack to be the size of a small sleeping bag. It’s also water-resistant, which is more than enough for most underquilts since they don’t ever (in theory) make contact with the ground.

Wise Owl Outfitters Insulated Down Hammock Underquilt

$54.95

Key Specs

Warmth Rating: 40º FCompressed Size: 12 x 8 x 8 in.Weight: 27 oz.

You’ll find plenty of hammock quilts for less than $50 on Amazon, but dig into the reviews, and you’ll see one major flaw: They don’t come anywhere near meeting their promised minimum temperature. That’s not the case with the Wise Owl Outfitters Hammock Underquilt, which comfortably insulates down to about 40 degrees F (maybe more like 50 without a quilt on top). It’s also more packable than you’d expect for the price.

Campers not quite ready to leave the option of using a sleeping bag behind may like the Grand Trunk 3-in-1 quilt, which works as a zippable sleeping quilt—kind of like a sleeping bag for your whole hammock. If you’re not hammock camping, you can use it as a normal sleeping bag or unzip it entirely to use as an outdoor quilt around the campfire.

Hyke & Byke Antero Hammock Compatible Down Sleeping Bag

$209.97

Key Specs

Warmth Rating: 0º FCompressed Size: 10 x 7 x 7 in.Weight: 3.7 lb.

If you’re taller than the average person, bigger around the hips, or just like having room to stretch your legs, you may find that an “average” size quilt doesn’t cover quite enough of your body. But the Hyke & Byke Hammock Compatible Sleeping Bag is an excellent alternate option. The long size fits people up to 6-foot-6 and has an extra 7 inches of width at the shoulders and 4 inches at the hips for bigger and taller bodies. It’s like a sleeping bag that goes around your hammock, giving you an overquilt and underquilt in one package. Note that the “sleeping bag” has holes on the top and bottom to accommodate your hammock, so it may be a little drafty for frequent use as a traditional sleeping bag.

You’ll find several hammock underquilts with ratings near the 0-degree F mark, but Warbonnet Outdoors takes it a step further with the Wooki Underquilt. It offers a “Scandinavian” temperature rating, which keeps you warm down to a frigid -20 degrees F. The shape tapers toward the bottom to help save weight while still providing enough coverage around your shoulders and core.

Ask any long-distance hiker and they’ll tell you that every inch of space in your bag matters—and every ounce you can cut from your gear helps you cover more miles per day. Hummingbird Hammocks, which makes ultralight hammocks, also makes the matching Puffin Underquilt. It weighs in at 1.6 pounds and packs up into narrow, 6.5-inch-diameter package. That makes it small and light enough to put in a backpack side pocket or strap across the top of your pack.

Key Specs

Warmth Rating: R value of 4.4 (roughly 15 to 20 degrees F)Compressed Size: 10 x 5 x 5 in.Weight: 35 oz.

Not quite ready to commit to hammock camping 100 percent of the time? Then consider the Klymit Hammock Sleeping V Pad. It’s very similar to a pad you’d use with a sleeping bag (inflatable with small air chambers to prevent compression), but the folding side panels help it lay more smoothly in a curved hammock than a standard pad would. It’ll also double as a sleeping pad while tent camping and has a four-season warmth rating.
