all-new bmw i4 electric sedan breaks cover with 590 kilometers of range

BMW’s all-electric lineup has not got a new entrant, the all-new i4 sedan. Designed as a four-door coupe, the i4 is built on BMW’s CLAR platform, albeit a heavily-modified one. The upscale Bavarian automaker had first previewed the i4 concept at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2020. Over the past few years, the company has been extremely busy working on several all-electric models. In fact, BMW says that half of its sales by 2030 will be from EVs. At the same time, almost every model that it will sell in the future will feature electrical assistance of some kind or the other.

The all-new BMW i4 is essentially a fully-electric version of the upcoming 4-Series Gran Coupe. Therefore, expect to find several design similarities between the two models. Being a new BMW, it is impossible to miss the ‘love it or hate it’ front fascia that proudly boasts the brand’s massive kidney grille. Of course, this being an electric car, the actual grille is mostly closed off, with only the bottom bit left open for cooling purposes. Then there are the angry-looking, but sophisticated LED laser headlamps with BMW’s characteristic LED DRL design.

The alloy wheels on this car are specific to it and have been designed to reduce drag as they spin. From the sides, it is easy to see the coupe-like design and the rising shoulder line of the i4. Just as apparent are is the frameless design of the doors and the steeply-raked rear windscreen. One of the other elements that will grab your attention are the blue bits of trim that are on the exterior. BMW applies this blue trim to all of their i cars, this i4 is no exception. You can find this effect on the kidney grille, LED headlamps, along the sides, and at the back on the rear bumper.

Speaking of which, the rear of the all-new i4 sports suave LED taillights, a sculpted two-tone bumper, and some air channels for improved aerodynamics. BMW hasn’t showcased the interior of the all-new i4 yet, but it will share some design elements with the upcoming 4-Series Gran Coupe as well. However, it will be interesting to see how the i4’s cabin performs in terms of its space for rear occupants. Due to the batteries stored underneath the car, manufacturers usually have to raise the floor. This usually tends to eat up some of the space in the interior. And with the sloping roofline of the BMW i4, cabin space could be tight. Then again, that’s just mere speculation for now.

According to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure or WLTP, the all-new BMW i4 has a maximum range of 590 kilometers. BMW hasn’t revealed much in the way of the i4’s technical specifications, but we do know that its dual electric motors will provide a combined 530hp of output. There is a chance that lower versions of the i4 will mostly be rear-wheel-drive, whilst more powerful ones will get the brand’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Moreover, BMW has promised that the all-new i4 sedan will get an M Performance variant down the line as well.
