apple steps up iphone assembly in india

Foxconn will begin shipping the iPhone 14 from its assembly plant in India almost as soon as its Chinese plant starts shipping Apple’s next smartphone, according to an industry analyst. This is apparently a sign that Apple is decreasing its dependence on China.

And Foxconn is reportedly building up its assembly capacity in India.

Your next iPhone could be assembled in India

Although iPhone components come from around the world, the actual assembly of the devices generally happens in China. But not all of it… Apple has increased the number of iPhones assembled in India in recent years.

The iPhone SE was made in the south Asian country, and iPhone 13 assembly began at Foxconn facilities there in spring 2022.

And Apple’s next model may already be in production there. “Foxconn’s iPhone production site in India will ship the new 6.1″ iPhone 14 almost simultaneously with China for the first time,” according to Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities.

He calls this, “an important milestone for Apple in building a non-Chinese iPhone production site. It implies that Apple is trying to reduce the geopolitical impacts on supply and sees the Indian market as the next key growth driver.”

More production requires more production facilities

With Foxconn increasing iPhone assembly in India, it’s only logical that it’s opening another manufacturing unit devoted to Apple handsets in that country, according to the Economic Times.

The new unit will be part of its Tamil Nadu factory, and staffing is expected to begin before the end of 2022.
