bilibili’s new three-body problem animation tops 120 million views

Bilibili’s animated The Three-Body Problem series, an adaption of Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning sci-fi trilogy Remembrance of Earth’s Past, recorded 120 million plays on the video streaming platform in its first two days, after the first two episodes became available on Saturday. However, this figure also includes plays of the show’s trailers. First announced in 2019, the adaptation project was led by Bilibili and supported by the copyright owner The Three-Body Universe and notable Chinese studio YHKT Entertainment. To help viewers get to grips with a storyline that jumps across time and space, Bilibili has launched a Three-Body Wiki (our translation) alongside the show, with a series of info boxes providing background information and more details on certain plot points. As one of the most notable sci-fi stories in China, the Three-Body Problem has sold more than 29 million copies, according to Chinese media outlet The Cover. Netflix and Tencent Video are also working on adaptations of Liu’s trilogy, with the former headed up by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The most recent animated adaption prior to this weekend’s launch was The Three-Body Problem in Minecraft (our translation), which first launched in 2014. The show saw great success on Bilibili, with its third season – released in 2020 – securing a 9.9 out of 10 rating and 93 million plays. [TechNode reporting]
