every final fantasy game ranked from worst to best

Final Fantasy 16 is the upcoming new title in the mega-popular series from Square Enix and we have ranked every game to exist thus far.

Being the 16th iteration of the mainline series, there are 15 other games that have had a huge influence on the world of RPG gaming.

Although the Final Fantasy games have been around since 1987, we have used the more modern remasters and versions released on iOS or PC for the older games to give a reflection of what it is like to play them now.

We have ranked the first 15 mainline games in the Final Fantasy series based on their Metacritic score from worst to best.

Here is the full ranking of Final Fantasy games based on their Metacritic score:

15. Final Fantasy II

The second game in the series scored 73% on Metacritic. We’re going based on the iOS score for the title.

14. Final Fantasy

The original game comes in just above II, with 74% on Metacritic. Again we’re going based on the iOS score for the game.

13. Final Fantasy III

Another from the original trilogy, which scored 80% on Metacritic for the iOS version of the title.

12. Final Fantasy XIII

A very divisive and controversial title for the Playstation 3, as fans felt it was far too linear. This scored 83% on Metacritic.

11. Final Fantasy XI

XI was the first foray into the MMO genre for Final Fantasy on the Playstation 2, and sadly didn’t quite reach the heights of another title on the list due to the infancy of online gaming on console at the time. 85% on Metacritic.

10. Final Fantasy XV

The PS4, PC and Stadia game sadly didn’t quite hit the ground running like Square Enix hoped it would do. 85% on Metacritic for the PC version.

9. Final Fantasy V

Another from the classic sprite era of the Super Nintendo and a genuinely beloved game by fans of FF. 85% on Metacritic.

8. Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn

Although this second attempt at a Final Fantasy MMO launched in an appalling state, Square Enix has turned it around into one of the best in the genre. 86% on Metacritic.

7. Final Fantasy IV

Another iOS port that has done extremely well in terms of critical reception, it also helps that the game is great. 89% on Metacritic.

6. Final Fantasy VIII

The second Final Fantasy on Playstation 1 was met with critical reception and is a cult classic, but many fans actually hated the gameplay mechanics and convoluted storyline. 90% on Metacritic.

5. Final Fantasy X

The first-ever Final Fantasy game to feature voice acting and debut on the Playstation 2, and it was a major, major hit that earned a sequel; a first for a mainline Final Fantasy game. 92% on Metacritic.

4. Final Fantasy XII

Back to the Playstation 2 and another massive moment for the FF franchise. 92% on Metacritic.

3. Final Fantasy VI

Ask a lot of Final Fantasy fans which is the best game in the series and they will point you to VI. The Gameboy Advance port of the classic is fantastic and earned 92% on Metacritic.

2. Final Fantasy VII

The iconic Final Fantasy title and the first-ever on the Playstation 1. Still revered after all of these years, there’s a reason they made a remake. 92% on Metacritic.

1. Final Fantasy IX

The last Final Fantasy game on PS1, and it tops the list with 94% on Metacritic. This game was a throwback to the classic sprite era of the series, and fans absolutely loved the change in style from the previous two PS1 games.

A number of these games are still available to play even without the original hardware. Xbox Game Pass currently offers Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster and Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy 7 was previously available but was taken off of the service in September 2021, there is currently no indication if it will be returning.

There are also a number of Final Fantasy games available via the Steam store. Steam will offer massive discounts throughout the year, so players may be able to grab some of the classic games in the series cheaply.

Nintendo Switch also has a wide range of Final Fantasy games to download from the Nintendo eShop for players who want to re-live or play these RPG classics for the very first time.
