If the Mission R is anything to go by, there's a lot to look forward to.
The Porsche 911 remains the core of the automaker’s lineup, but for many people, the more affordable 718 model line is the only way they can drive off in a new Porsche sports car. But the Boxster and Cayman are set to undergo a dramatic transformation in the near future. Early in September, Porsche unveiled the Mission R concept, a compact racer relying on electric power alone. Porsche suggested that the Mission R was more than just a random concept, and the automaker went about developing it as if it were any other production model. All of this points to electrified Cayman and Boxster models that could have a lot more in common with the Mission R than we think.
We imagined what the future, fully electric 718 may look like, and the striking Mission R makes for a fantastic starting point. The squat, compact proportions are in keeping with the 718, and we added some lower detailing from the electric Taycan that is less extreme than the treatment on the concept. Both the Cayman and Boxster wear the updated look well, and from a stylistic standpoint, we think they’ll hold plenty of appeal.
Based on the Mission R, the next 718 will be extremely quick. The Mission R generates over 1,000 horsepower from dual electric motors and will reach 62 mph in under 2.5 seconds. What will be more of a challenge is ensuring that the sporty 718, clearly the dynamic benchmark in its segment, drives as well with a fully electric powertrain and a heavy battery pack.
Of course, Porsche has navigated fundamental powertrain changes before. When the Boxster started employing four-cylinder engines, Porsche traditionalists were up in arms. But besides the loss of the familiar flat-six soundtrack, the 718 still demands respect. Reports indicate that the electric 718 will make use of a special battery layout known as 'e-core'. This dedicated EV platform will allow for a low center of gravity that mimics that of a typical mid-engine layout. We all know how good the current 718 is to drive, and we wouldn't put it past Porsche to instill a high level of dynamism in its compact sports car whether or not it has an engine. Porsche has already shown us what it can do with the Taycan electric sedan, too. After that, an even bigger challenge awaits Porsche: electrifying the iconic 911.
