Here’s What We Learnt From the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Direct

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 arrives soon and, so, we got a Nintendo Direct to whet players appetite for this action-RPG.

Why a Nintendo Direct? Because Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (actually the eighth entry in the Xeno series) is a Nintendo Switch exclusive title and unlike Monster Hunter Rise, not even the PC gets a look in.

The Direct ran for just under 25 minutes and showed Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in action, coupled with a little narration. If you’ve played the original Xenoblade Chronicles, some of these features will be familiar to you, but there are more than a few new features on offer too.

Here are some of the things we learned:

  • Taking place in the world of Aionios, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 features two warring nations, Keves and Agnus. Six of the soldiers from these nations  are tasked with a special mission, giving you a basic party size of six.
  • The characters live for ten years, and spend most of their lives fighting. That might sound great if you’re a Sontaran or Klingon, but to us it just seems really, really, depressing.
  • There’s a city in the shape of a massive sword, which the characters are heading towards. We’re eager to discover whether it was dropped there by some colossal entity or ancient beings just crafted it that way to look cool.
  • You’ll end up fighting soldiers from both sides of the conflict, who seem almost brainwashed into scrapping with each other.
  • You can climb cliffs, use zip-lines and generally traverse the world however you want. It sounds like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be keeping the invisible walls to a minimum.
  • Even though you have six basic characters, you can recruit heroes who, while not participating in the story as such, can be aid your party and be swapped out at will.
  • There’s a paid expansion pass available, priced at $29.99. You can find the full details here, but it’ll include new outfits, new quests and a new story scenario, delivered in four waves.
  • You can use any Amiibo with the game. For example, tap Shulk, protagonist of the original Xenoblade Chronicles, and you’ll get a special Monado sword when using the swordfighter class. We’re hoping that tapping Wario will give all your characters a fanciful moustache.

You can watch the whole Direct above and get your hands on Xenoblade Chronicles 3 when it launches on the Nintendo Switch this July 29th.
