General Methods to Find Your Laptop IP address

Checking the IP Address on Microsoft Windows

If you are a Windows user, there are three ways to find the device IP. While the first two methods are standard, the last one can differ slightly from every Windows variant.

Command Prompt Script Control Panel Network Settings

There is a very simple command that allows Windows users to check their IP addresses. The command we mention is a part of a bigger network flushing process. Here are the steps to check your IP through the CMD tool –

Launch your Command Prompt window. The easiest way to this tool is by searching for it in the taskbar search panel (Windows + S).

When the script window is up, type the following command:

nslookup myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com

Hit the Enter key to execute this line. When the results appear, look under the Address section. You should be able to see the IP to the active network.

If you are looking to find the IPv6 IP address as well, you can run the ipconfig command also.

Control Panel

The Control Panel also houses options to view and adjust the network. This can be used to check and change the IP address and DNS. The Control Panel interface has not changed much in the last four Windows versions; So the procedure is not different.

Use the following steps to find the IP address through the CPL window –

Bring the Control Panel window up. This can be easily accessed by searching for Cpl. Click on the Network & Internet settings tile.

Go into the Network & Sharing Center option. From the left panel, select the Change adapter settings option. This will launch the Network Connections window. Double-click on the connected network. This could either be a wireless or ethernet connection. In the Network Status window, choose the Details button. When the following window appears, check the IPv4 Address section. The value to its right is your device’s IP address.

Network Settings

The latest Windows versions have different settings layouts. This makes the steps different while trying to identify the network information.

Windows 11

Push the Windows and I key to open the Settings application. From the left panel, choose the Network & Internet option.

Click on the type of network that is active on your system. It can either be Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Move into the Network properties option. On this page, look for the IPv4 address section. This can be found at the bottom of the page.

Windows 10

Open the Start menu and search for the Settings.

Click on the Network & Internet settings tile. From the set of options on the left panel, select Ethernet or WiFi. This option will vary depending on the type of local network. Choose the Network option and locate the IPv4 address category. If you are using a wireless connection, you will have to use the Properties link. This option will take you to a page with information on the wireless network.

Windows 8.1

Bring the Start menu up by using the Windows button. Search for the Network connection settings option. Now, open the first search result. In the Connections menu, choose the Network option. This is where the IP address will be shown.

Windows 7

Launch the Control Panel window on your PC. In the Network and Internet section, select the View network status and tasks link.

Under the View your active networks section, click on the Local Area Connection link. This will display the LAN status window. Click on the Details button in the General tab. Under the Network Connection Details window, check the IPv4 address option. This is your local IP address. For both these options, you will find the IP mentioned in the network status.

Checking the IP Address on Mac

If you have a MacBook, there are two ways to find the computer’s IP address.

macOS Terminal

Go into the Applications folder and move to the Utilities folder. Launch the Terminal tool. When the script window appears, execute either of these commands based on the active network – USB LAN – ipconfig getifaddr en1 Wi-Fi – ipconfig getifaddr en0 Public IP address – curl ifconfig.me

System Preferences

Click on the Apple icon at the top-left corner of the window. Choose the System Preferences option from the pop-up menu. From the left panel, choose the Network option. WiFI users have to click on the Wi-FI option. Users with a USB connection have to use the LAN or USB option.

Checking the IP Address on Chromebook

If you have a Chromebook, you have two options to find their Private IP address.

Chromebook Settings

Expand the system tray by clicking on it. This is located in the lower-right corner of the screen. At the top of the tray, select the Settings option. Wait for the window to appear. Choose the Network tab from the main menu. Select the wired or wireless connection option, as per the connection type. Move down the page to find the IP address. You can use these options to set a manual IP address as well.

Web Browser

Launch the Google Chrome browser on your Chromebook. Type in chrome://system in the address bar and hit the enter key. Bring up the search tool by pushing Ctrl and F keys, together. In the search overlay, look for ifconfig. When you see it, click on the Expand button adjacent to the ifconfig option. Locate the wlan0 section and the inet line, specifically. The three numbers after it is the IP address for your internet connection.
