The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be available in a cheaper rear-drive Dynamiq model in Australia in the latest August drop – the seventh release of the midsize electric car since its launch in October 2021.

August’s Australian supply of 135 cars will go on sale at 1pm AEST on August 10, with the allocation made up of a roughly even split of Dynamiq 2WD ($69,900 before on-road costs) and Techniq AWD ($77,500) models.

The total August allocation is higher than July’s 119-strong drop, and also differs from the July release which included only top-spec Techniq AWD models.

Another batch of Ioniq 5s is headed for Australia this month

All of the Ioniq 5 Techniq AWD models coming to Australia this time around will also be equipped with the $1500 ‘vision’ glass roof.

Prospective buyers will need to get in fast, as Hyundai offers the small allocation to the ‘first in best dressed’. According to senior public relations manager Guido Schenken, the last batch sold out in just 20 minutes.

Mr Schenken indicated that the Ioniq 5 will continue to be sold in batches, with roughly 4-6 weeks anticipated between arrivals depending on production.

This differs largely from Kia’s tactic in Australia, with EV6 waiting lists up above 12 months despite that electric large SUV’s recent price bump.

For the time being, Hyundai will continue to sell the Ioniq 5 in batches

The August batch of Ioniq 5s will be sold in every state and territory but the NT. Mr Schenken told Chasing Cars that there is more demand up and down the eastern seaboard, with larger cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane making up the bulk of sales.

Since its launch in Australia last October, Hyundai has managed to shift 809 Ioniq 5s according to official VFACTS sales figures.

Which Ioniq 5s will be available?

As of July 2022, Hyundai dropped the price of entry to the Ioniq 5 range with a new model structure. The Dynamiq, as it’s now known, is $2000 cheaper than the previous range-opening RWD grade – though it is technically a trim grade lower in the global Ioniq 5 hierarchy, and has less equipment than the outgoing ‘flagship’ RWD car

For instance, the Ioniq 5 Dynamiq RWD goes without front seat ventilation and rear seat heating – two features that are now exclusive to the Techniq AWD.

Hyundai now offers two trim levels of Ioniq 5 called the Dynamiq and Techniq

The rear-drive Ioniq 5 uses a single electric motor to provide 160kW of power and its smaller 19-inch wheels mean the base Ioniq 5 can now travel 30km further (481km WLTP) from a charge of its 72.6kWh lithium ion battery pack.

The new flagship Techniq offers the same 225kW power output and 430km WLTP range as before, the only change to its specification is the deletion of the sunroof as standard.

Just like the Dynamiq, the Techniq is capable of ultra-rapid charging taking the 72.6kWh lithium ion battery pack from 10-80 percent in 18 minutes.

There will be a mix of colour options available, and buyers are encouraged to contact their dealer early to catch an Ioniq 5 in the August drop.

  • Ioniq 5 Dynamiq (RWD): $69,900 (down $2000)
  • Ioniq 5 Techniq (AWD): $77,500 (up $2600)
