india-bound volvo xc60 facelift unveiled, gets new android-based infotainment system

The XC60 is Volvo’s best-selling model in the world, and it has been around since 2008. In the thriving mid-size luxury SUV segment in India, the Volvo XC60 isn’t the most omnipresent. While the Swedish carmaker does have a brilliant reputation all over the globe, not many buyers in India consider Volvo as often as they consider its German rivals. However, this doesn’t equate to the XC60 not being a good car. On the contrary, it is responsible for nearly 29 percent of the brand’s overall car sales all over the globe. Moreover, Volvo is serious about its India presence, having promised three new releases this year – including the facelifted XC60.

The outgoing (and the then all-new) second-generation XC60 made its way into the market back in 2017. Therefore, this new iteration comes as a mid-life cycle update and thus doesn’t break the mold as it exists right now. However, Volvo has made a few tweaks on the outside of the facelifted XC60 for better clarity.

Of course, the visual changes are pretty mild and you might have to place the old and new models right next to each other to actually tell which is which. Volvo says that it has given the XC60 facelift a new grille, a new front bumper, new exterior color choices, and new designs for the alloy wheels. While the facelift might not have changed much on the outside, the XC60 has always been a handsome-looking SUV.

In the cabin of the XC60 facelift, just like the exterior, the differences aren’t that apparent at first. However, Volvo has executed a few changes which may or may not matter to some. Firstly, customers can now pick an eco-friendly and leather-free upholstery that the automaker calls ‘City Weave’ textile. Volvo promises that the new material is just as luxurious as regular leather. On top of that, the XC60 facelift beings some more equipment in the form of Volvo’s latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) platform. This brings several active safety features such as Pilot Assist, automatic braking along with collision avoidance, and also the capability to detect other road users.

The biggest change on the inside, between the facelifted XC60 and the outgoing model, can be seen on the dashboard. It is the new Android-based infotainment system. Since it runs on Android, the infotainment system now gets several Google services and apps built right into the head unit. Not just that, Volvo will also offer customers of the XC60 facelift a Digital Services package. This means that one can not only use services like Google Assistant but also many in-car apps straight from the Play Store. And if you are worried about data plans, fret not, as Volvo has already thought of it. The Digital Services package will come with the data that will be required to run the services.

The rest of the Volvo XC60 facelift will remain unmodified, though that’s not a bad thing. As it is, unique design traits of the XC60 are easily enough clues to identify it as a Volvo. The sleek LED headlamps with their Thor’s hammer-like DRLs and a large grille with vertical slats lend this fascia plenty of sophistication. Adding on to the exterior charm of the XC60 are oodles of chrome, large but chic-looking alloy wheels, and L-shaped LED tail lamps at the back. There is some more chrome on the rear bumper as well. At the same time, unlike some of its rivals, the Volvo XC60 still resembles a station wagon on stilts.

With its India launch still some time away, Volvo hasn’t released any data regarding the XC60 facelift’s powertrain. At present, the outgoing model is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. It is available in two states of tune – 187hp (in the D4) and 232hp (in the D5). In India, both these oil burners come equipped with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. As for the facelifted XC60, it will come to our shores with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. In some international markets, Volvo offers the XC60 facelift will three turbo-petrol powerplants – these range in their output from 187hp (in the T4) to 306hp (in the T6).
