The iPhone 15 is reportedly in trial production, a fairly early stage in bringing the product to market. Still, it means the final feature set and design are essentially complete and Apple is thinking about assembling the device.
Trial production is going on at a Foxconn plant in China. The iPhone 15 will also be made in India.
2023 trial production starts a bit early
Although Apple’s next-gen iPhone isn’t expected until September, trial production typically kicks off well in advance. And this year, it seems to be starting even earlier than usual.
The first report that iPhone 14 trial production surfaced in mid-February 2022. But the Chinese-language Economic Daily News reports that Foxconn and Apple have already reached that stage for the iPhone 15.
This gives the companies plenty of time to iron out potential kinks before mass-production begins in the summer.
What to expect from the iPhone 15
Trial production means Apple has nearly locked in the features for the iPhone 15 series, though some tweaks are possible. And many details about the upcoming handsets have already leaked out.
Perhaps most notably, these will be the first iPhones with USB-C rather than a lightning port. The change was mandated by the European Union but will apparently extend around the world.
Plus, leaks point to a more complete redesign than iPhone has undergone in recent years. All four of the fall 2023 iOS handsets are expected to feature the Dynamic Island, not just the Pros. And Apple supposedly will bring titanium to the new series, and the redesign will also include more rounded edges.
