ZTE was the first to launch a commercial smartphone with an under-screen camera. The risk was high and the first attempt failed. The quality of the photos on the camera under the display surface did not stand up to criticism and did not succeed in loudly declaring itself. The ZTE Axon 20 will go down in history as the first failed under-screen camera experiment.

But the setback didn’t dampen ZTE’s determination to bring advanced technology to the masses. Last year, the ZTE Axon 30 saw the light, and now it will find a successor in the face of the Axon 40 and the Axon 40 Ultra will debut alongside with it. Today, pictures of the Axon 40 Ultra have been posted with an emphasis on the front panel, where there are no traces of the front camera.

Noteworthy is the installation of a curved panel with thin frames around the perimeter. Finding the location of the selfie camera with the naked eye is impossible. Whether this will be the case in reality, we will only find out with the release of the smartphone, because the photo could have been taken in ideal conditions and from the right angle to hide the presence of the camera.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra should offer Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, up to 12 GB of RAM, a triple rear camera with a 64-megapixel main sensor and Android 12 operating system. The ZTE Axon 40 family will launch in May.

Leaked photos of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra with an under-display camera

The Chinese regulator TENAA has recently published detailed specifications and live photos of the flagship smartphone ZTE Axon 40 in its database. Judging by the parameters and appearance, this model will turn out to be a Nubia Z40 clone; only the Nubia Z40 will be available outside of China, and the Axon 40 is for domestic sales.

The ZTE Axon 40 features a 6.67-inch Full HD+ OLED screen with an in-display fingerprint scanner and a 44-megapixel front camera. The main camera – with sensors with a resolution of 64, 8 and 5 megapixels. The Nubia Z40 Pro uses a 35mm lens and a brand new Sony sensor; and it’s possible that the same combination applies to the Axon 40.

The hardware platform is based on the SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. There are many options for RAM – 6, 8, 12 and 16 GB. There are also four flash memory options: 128, 256, 512 GB and 1 TB.

The smartphone received a 5000 mAh battery with support for 66 W fast charging. The OS was Android 12. The dimensions and weight of the device are 163.37 x 75.88 x 8.56 mm and 199.9 grams.

Since the Axon 40 got already the certifications, we expect it to launch in China soon. Well, already on February 25, the official premiere of Nubia Z40 and Nubia Z40 Pro will take place.
