electric buses, ie tram, irizar, mallorca, spain

Irizar has won a contract to deliver twelve electric buses to Palma on the island of Mallorca. EMT Palma expects deliveries of the Irizar ie tram e-buses to begin in early 2023. This time, Irizar has added an extra to the roof of the buses.

The Irizar buses of type ie tram headed for Mallorca will have solar panels on top to power the auxiliary systems of the buses. As for propulsion, they will have 430 kWh batteries on board that charge via an inverted pantograph or a Combo 2 charging outlet.

In this case, the ie tram model measures twelve metres, and ETM Palma opted for three doors and 22 seats (four of which are for PRM) with a total capacity of up to 70 passengers. The drive unit is a 206 kW central motor.

The Mayor of Palma José Hila, on a visit to the Irizar factory, said public transport was fundamental to achieving a more sustainable city. “The EMT needs to have buses that use clean energy. And that’s what we’re doing.”

The Balearic government targets banning ICE vehicles from the streets of Mallorca by 2035. A diesel ban is to start even sooner, by 2025, as reported. The ‘Green Hyslan’ project has received EU funds to make Mallorca a European benchmark in zero-emission transport and green energy.

Palma de Mallorca and operator EMT has also placed an order with Solaris to test hydrogen buses in March 2022.

As for the battery-electric vehicles from Irizar, Txema Otero, Irizar e-mobility Commercial Director for Spain & Portugal, said he considered the order strategic because of the visibility Palma has in the tourism market.

It is not the first order from Spain, of course. Irizar recently scored a range of contracts from Pamplona, Valladolid, and Madrid, adding up to 140 zero-emission buses.
