mi tv 5x 55-inch review: worth your money

Mi TV 5X

Xiaomi had launched the Mi TV 5X series last month during the Mi Smarter Living 2022 event along with a number of other products under the same branding. The new smart TV line-up comes in three different screen sizes - 43-inches (Rs 31,999), 50-inches (Rs 41,999), and the flagship 55-inch variant which I got for review. The last costs Rs 47,999, which to be honest, is pretty impressive for a 55-inch 4K smart TV that comes with support for both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

The Mi TV 5X also introduces few new features on Xiaomi TVs like Adaptive Brightness that adjusts the brightness of the television according to the light in the home, PatchWall 4 interface, and a new integration with IMDb database. Now, the question is Is the Mi TV 5X worth buying? Let's find out.

Mi TV 5X 55-inch review: Design and Build

The Mi TV 5X is a typical Xiaomi smart TV which flaunts a minimalist design and sturdy build. It has an aluminum alloy frame on all four sides with a brushed metallic finish that gives the Mi TV 5X a premium look. One thing I was quick to notice is that the Mi branding has now been replaced by Xiaomi, even though the TV was launched before Xiaomi made the official announcement. Not that it make any viewing difference.

You can either use a table-top stand of the wall mount to instal the TV. Only the table stand is included in the retail box though and customers will have to buy the wall mount separately.

Overall, the build quality seems solid and justifies the price tag.

Mi TV 5X 55-inch review: Connectivity options

The Mi TV 5X covers most connectivity options you seek on a smart TV. The 55-inch variant has three HDMI 2.1 ports, two USB ports, one Ethernet port, one optical port, one 3.5mm port, and an AV input port. Two HDMI ports support features like ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel).

Finding the HDMI settings on Xiaomi TVs has always been a task (not after you figure it out) and it remains unchanged even here. There is also Bluetooth connectivity which can be used to pair the Mi remote and other accessories with the smart TV. Lastly, there are far-field mics for easier access to Google Assistant.

Mi TV 5X 55-inch review: Display

I keep bumping into these interesting conversations these days around the ideal TV size. Of course, people are consuming more content than before and have hardly visited movie theatres in last 18 months. So, they want the best experience in their living room. Having tested so many smart TVs in this period, I strongly feel that anything between 50 and 55-inches is more than enough.

I reviewed the Mi TV QLED 75 earlier this year, and it was huge. I have another 85-inch TV waiting to be reviewed, and it's just intimidating. That's where the Mi TV 5X finds the ideal balance between size and experience.

It comes with a 55-inch 4K panel (3840×2160 pixels) with one billion colour view, 96.6 percent screen-to-body ratio, and Adaptive Brightness a feature that we have previously seen on smartphones and smart wearables.

The feature makes more sense on smartphones because it not only reduces strain on your eyes but also reduces the battery drainage. The latter is not an issue on smart TVs. To execute Adaptive Brightness, Mi TV 5X uses a built-in photoelectric sensor that adjusts the panel's backlight adapting to the room lighting conditions.

The display supports most viewing formats including HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. I must point out that it is still rare to find Dolby Vision support on smart TVs under Rs 50,000, especially from mainstream television makers.

Xiaomi has kept the bezels really thin they are nearly missing on the sides and it elevates your overall viewing experience. I watched movies, shows and a few Premier League matches on the Mi TV 5X. The TV made for a good viewing experience for almost all types of content. I watched Black Widow and Mortal Kombat on Mi TV 5X. The colours popped out and looked punchy. The visuals were smooth and crisp.

For example and spoiler alert, the Hanzo Hasashi return sequence in Mortal Kombat where he releases the knife towards Bi-Han looked absolutely stunning. Just that it deserved a better movie.

The peak brightness could have been better though. It's not like the panel is not bright enough, but there were sequences, were I demanded more. The panel is fairly colour accurate but, you may want to adjust the settings in some cases. Pro tip you may also want to switch off Motion Smoothing.

In case you play games on a console, you should know that this is a 60Hz panel but, it shouldn't be a problem since most games still run at 60Hz refresh rate. I played Spider-Man Miles Morales and Fifa 21 on the Mi TV 5X. Both the games were enjoyable.

Mi TV 5X 55-inch review: Audio

This is one area where smart TVs needed an upgrade, and it's good to see it happening. The 20W or 24W speakers were just not enough and always left you wishing for more clear audio. Xiaomi has used 40W speakers on Mi TV 5X, and they are genuinely loud. The speakers cover your bedroom or a usual living room, giving an immersive experience. The TV also supports Dolby Atmos and there is an option to switch it on or off.

Mi TV 5X 55-inch review: Software

Let me admit, initially I was not a huge fan of Xiaomi's Patchwall UI. I found it confusing for a normal viewer who probably won't be as tech-savy. But, Xiaomi has changed my mind lately. There have been some useful changes to the software and the latest is the IMDb integration. It gives you ratings for content and saves the time you would otherwise spend on Google.

The integration is not available for all types of content but, is good to have. You can also access the IMDb top 100 list, HDR 10+ content, Dolby Vision content, content segregated by actors, directors, etc. There is also a separate section for Live TV.

Patchwall continues to show you curated content from different streaming platforms. It also lists down content under different categories and sections. The browsing experience can be better though. It still faced some lags while switching between tabs and menus. But, it's nothing concerning.

Mi TV 5X 55-inch review: Final verdict

One thing that is really good to see is that Xiaomi is taking steps in the right direction and is improving an already impressive line-up of smart TVs. At the same time, it is also making these offerings more accessible. A 55-inch 4K smart TV with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos is anyway an exciting prospect.

The Mi TV 5X is built well, overall picture quality is good, Patchwall is fun to use and the speakers are loud as well. And, after using the TV for a few days, I can say that it is definitely worth your money.
