Pirelli highlights one-stopper as optimal strategy in Singapore

Formula 1’s tyre supplier Pirelli have predicted a one-stop race in the Singapore Grand Prix, stating that the C3 Hard tyre will be the optimal race tyre to carry out a long final stint.

Pirelli brought the softest compounds to the newly resurfaced Marina Bay Street Circuit with the C3, C4 and C5 compounds at the disposal of all 20 drivers to ensure the highest levels of mechanical grip.

The Italian tyre manufacturer highlighted two viable strategies, the first being a medium-hard strategy with the pit window being open between laps 22 and 28.

Alternatively, those who opt for a soft-hard strategy will see their pit windows open between laps 18 and 24.

It’s the first time back in Singapore since 2019 and more importantly, it’s the first time back at the track with the 2022 spec 18-inch wheels.

This paired with the new asphalt on the track, Pirelli’s Motorsport Director Mario Isola stated: “It’s almost like a totally new race.

“We’ve missed the spectacular night action of Singapore’s streets! This track is all about slow corners – all 23 of them – and maximising traction.

“We’ve got the three softest compounds for maximum speed and grip but looking after the rear tyres in order to ensure the drive needed will be key.

“With the tendency of the latest cars to understeer, it will be even more important to find the right set-up balance to ensure a strong front end without compromising acceleration at the rear.”

While track temperatures are relatively stable through the race, the humid conditions provide a gruelling physical challenge for the drivers as well as the tyres which will suffer from thermal degradation.

Also, there is always the possibility of a strategy shake-up with every previous Singapore Grand Prix featuring at least one Safety Car. As seen on Saturday evening’s sessions, rain is also a key factor in how the strategies of all ten teams will play out.
