Qualcomm announced not one, but two new Bluetooth audio platforms to round off its annual Snapdragon Summit launches – the Snapdragon S5 Gen 2, and the Snapdragon S3 Gen 2.
The Gen 2 versions of Snapdragon Sound chipsets are a follow-up to the audio chipsets launched at MWC 2022. Both sound platform processors add several new features to deliver premium audio experiences in OEM products, and are further optimised to complement gadgets that also use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
New features to S5 and S3 Gen 2 are mostly picked out from Qualcomm’s end-user wishlist, the 2022 State of Sound Report. More than half of Qualcomm’s polled consumers want spatial audio support in premium true wireless earbuds, among other features.
To that end, the S5 and S3 Gen 2 offer spatial audio support, dynamic head tracking support, improved lossless music streaming for Bluetooth LE Audio stereo headsets, and 48ms low-latency audio for lag-free gaming.
Also added is Qualcomm’s third-generation of Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation, which relies on ear fit and external noise for ANC tuning. Adaptive ANC also comes with Adaptive Transparency Mode with automatic speech detection, letting users get smoother transitions between speech and full-on noise-cancellation.
Qualcomm S5 Gen 2 and S3 Gen 2 sound platforms are now sampling to personal audio makers, with commercial products coming in H2 2023.
