Recalls in the automotive industry are nothing new. However, it can still be concerning to receive a letter about a recall on your daily driver. Recently, Ram pickup trucks announced they have a recall on over 100,000 trucks across their lineup. So, what is the cause of this recall? How can these issues be resolved? Is my vehicle included in the recall? Here is everything you need to know about this Ram truck recall.

A rearview issue

This Ram truck recall revolves around an issue with the rearview backup camera. As of May 2018, all cars sold in the United States must have a backup camera, regardless of trim level or class. This is why you’ll see many base model work trucks and sub-compacts with rearview cameras, even if the rest of the car has basic amenities.

The goal of this required camera was to help improve visibility as bigger pillars in vehicles were required for increasing safety standards. With less visibility due to larger bodywork and smaller windows, this camera ensured you could back up safely.

Accidents occurring while a vehicle is reversing is called a backover accident. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, backover accidents are not only an issue in public but also in workspaces and residential areas. In 2011, backover accidents were responsible for the deaths of over 70 workers in the country. The Ram pickup trucks’ safety recall ensures these cameras continue to function properly.

The Ram pickup trucks affected

This recall includes Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks built with a specific radio and rearview camera combination. These combinations are incompatible, and the radio will prevent the rearview camera from displaying under certain conditions. This issue only persists on 2022 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks with GVWR less than 10,000lbs.

How to get your recall completed

Thankfully, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can take your VIN, and any open recalls will be displayed. Typically, automotive companies will also try to contact you based on the address to which your vehicle is registered. Luckily, this rearview camera recall is an easy fix and only requires a software update free of charge.

While there are many recalls that can affect cars of every model year, newer technology has reduced the severity of these recalls. Most recall repairs are completed quickly and without any major headaches. This Ram truck recall seems minor compared to other 2022 automotive recalls.

One such instance includes Ford’s 40 different recalls so far this year. One of which included 650,000 Ford vehicles due to inoperative windshield wipers. Volkswagen also dealt with some serious recalls, with over 220,000 vehicles affected due to delayed deployment of airbags.
