The 2022 model year will soon begin.
It's been an interesting ride so far for the C8 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The first-ever mid-engined Vette got off to a rocky production start nearly two years ago because of what turned into a five-week-long UAW strike that affected all of General Motors. And then the coronavirus pandemic struck and everything changed for the worst. Over the past year and a half, Chevy and other automakers have faced factory shutdowns, supplier issues (including the semiconductor chip shortage), and various other hurdles. Despite all of that, 2021 Corvette model year production actually improved over the previous year.
According to Corvette Blogger, Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles spoke at an event at the National Corvette Museum late last week where he revealed the total 2021 production tally.
As of this writing, 25,782 Corvettes have been completed at the Bowling Green, Kentucky manufacturing plant. Another 434 are scheduled for completion in the coming days. That’s a grand total of 26,216 units. An average of 175 examples were built each day, a figure Chevy hopes to surpass for the upcoming 2022 model year. Assuming there are no last-minute delays, the 2022 Vettes will begin rolling off the line this Wednesday, September 8.
It’s important to note that not all of the plant’s supplier issues have been sorted out though progress has been made. Despite everything, Bowling Green recently completed an impressive 13 weeks of uninterrupted production.
At present, it’s just one of four GM plants in the US that’s not part of a recently announced temporary closure due to a lack of those crucial chips. Like all automakers, GM has been prioritizing vehicles based on profit margins and general demand. The Corvette falls into the latter category as the waitlist continues to grow.
Many customers are paying thousands over sticker right now if they’re even lucky enough to find an example for sale. But GM’s big priority has been and continues to be keeping truck and SUV plants up and running. Those two segments are vital to the automaker’s bottom line.
