The first smartphone using Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to reach Chinese retailers is the Vivo X90 Pro+. Since then, the number of benchmarks on the Internet has increased. One of the most intriguing focuses is the platform’s gaming capabilities, namely its strength and stability. The results show that the Qualcomm processor is far superior to the A16 Bionic.

Some reviewers had the chance to test a smartphone with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU from Qualcomm during the Snapdragon Summit 2022. The outcomes were excellent, of course. They outperformed not only the recently launched Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processors. But also the Apple A15 and A16 Bionic processors, particularly in the GPU department.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performance test

The test was carried out using the Vivo X90 Pro+, the superb X80 Pro+’s successor. The X90 Pro + is the first smartphone featuring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that has been officially approved and that has hit Chinese retail shelves. As a result, it is now possible to assess the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s performance in real-world scenarios and compare it with that of the most recent Apple iPhone models. And the outcomes support the previous results.

The photo below was tweeted by a smartphone tester on YouTube named Golden Reviewer. There are two smartphones visible: the Vivo X90 Pro+ on the right and the iPhone 14 Pro Max on the left. Additionally, you can see that both smartphones performed the same benchmark, the Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, a 20-minute test that is the most difficult in 3DMark. The conclusion is clear.

Apple A16 bionic is less powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

The best loop on the X90 Pro+ scores 3757 points, compared to 3354 points on the iPhone. Even worse, the iPhone’s best loop is below the X90 Pro+’s lowest loop (3390 points). The stability of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is much better, and that isn’t even the most astonishing detail. The stability of the Qualcomm high-end SoC hits 90.2%. The iPhone, in contrast, only gets to 70%. This indicates that the Qualcomm CPU is more reliable in addition to being more powerful.

Has the Californian company at last stumbled across the magic formula for the ideal gaming platform? It is possible. One thing is still lacking, though: the temperature. Since the switch to 64-bit architectures, this has become one of the weak spots of many high-end Snapdragon chips. Has temperature regulation gotten any better? The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 must now overcome its final test.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor to offer a low battery consumption

Gizchina News of the week

The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC doesn’t only offer a significant performance bump, claims leaker Ice Universe. It is so effective that it uses 8 to 9 times less energy than its predecessor to achieve an equivalent level of performance.

The performance difference between a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with an Exynos 2200 processor and a Vivo, most likely the Vivo X90 Pro+, the first smartphone with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, has been estimated by Ice Universe. GeekBench 5 estimates that the increase in speed is about 25% for single-core processors and 45% for multi-core. A fantastic advancement that puts the chip on par with or even better than the newest Apple processors.

It appears that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 provides more than just excellent performance. It uses less energy as well. The GPU on the Qualcomm chip is 60% more powerful and 88% more efficient, claims Ice Universe. It remains to see if this outcome will actually shorten the S23’s battery life. Given that these measurements were not made in actual use situations, they should be seen in context.

Future European users of Samsung’s most famous smartphone will be delighted by Qualcomm’s confirmation that all models of the Samsung Galaxy S23 will feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Exynos chips installed in the Galaxy S have always performed somewhat worse than their American counterparts. Samsung gave up on the Exynos 2300 after experiencing overheating problems with its own chip, the Exynos 2200.

This holiday season, Samsung hopes to sell a significant number of high-end smartphones. The highly awaited Galaxy S23, the actual flagship of the Korean giant, will subsequently take the spotlight from the former. If the story is true, it might speed up the marketing of the Galaxy S23. The latter might become official at the start of February. It will include a customized Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, Wi-Fi 7, UFS 4.0 chips, and LPDDR5X RAM in addition to the processor.

Snapdragon 8 Gen is the best chip for gaming

Even though Qualcomm has prioritized artificial intelligence this year, graphics and application processors have not been ignored. Instead, they have also been strengthened. While the new Adreno 740 pro would have 25% more power for an increased energy economy of 45%, Qualcomm announced a 35% boost in CPU performance, for a 40% gain in energy efficiency.

Obviously, these are quite large figures. Some testers were eager to put that to the test using some benchmarks. Therefore, Qualcomm has provided them with a few test platforms that are pre-installed with the well-known programs that we frequently use, such as Geekbench, AnTuTu, 3DMark, etc. Keep in mind that the test smartphone has 256 GB of storage and 12 GB of RAM. It runs Android 13 and has a Full HD+ display. Let’s now discuss the outcomes of the test.

Using AnTuTu to begin. The test platform receives just 1.3 million points less than average. Clearly, this is a pretty impressive score. Keep in mind that devices with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 or lower typically don’t score higher than one million points. Only the Xiaomi 12T Pro and the ROG Phone 6 had been able to get this score. Additionally, they didn’t go over 1.2 million points. Therefore, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 represents a noticeable advance. The platform has heated up considerably, according to AnTuTu, to a temperature of 35°.
