Although global demand for entry-level and mid-range smartphones tends to decline, Sony expects demand for CMOS image sensors (CIS) used in high-end smartphones to remain robust in 2022, according to industry sources.

Mainly because of the expectation, Sony will expand its CIS production capacity in 2023, the sources said. But if sales of high-end smartphones in the second half of 2022 are short of original expectation, Sony will defer the planned expansion, the sources cited Sony executive vice president and CFO Yuichi Oshima as indicating.

According to Counterpoint Research, there were about 60 million smartphones sold in the China market in the second quarter of 2022, decreasing 14.2% on year. Sony holds the opinion that weak demand for smartphones in the China market is unlikely to rebound in 2022 and this will impact its CIS shipments.

Sony expects smartphone vendors to increase adoption of CIS used in large-aperture and high-resolution lenses beginning the third quarter of 2022, the sources noted.

As the short supply of logic ICs has eased, Sony is expected to hike the output of CIS, the sources indicated.

Sony has released its second-quarter 2022 financial report, and its imaging & sensing solution business segment (90% of sales revenues come from CIS) posted sales revenues of JPY237.8 billion (US$1.83 billion), increasing 6.9% on quarter and 9.0% on year, and operating profit of JPY21.7 billion, hiking 102.8% sequentially but dropping 28.9% on year. Sony also forecasts sales revenues of JPY1,440 billion and operating profit of JPY200 billion for 2022 for the business segment.
