Sony Pictures reveals new details on the next Spider-Verse films.
Sony Pictures has officially announced the new title for the third Spider-Verse animated movie. Previously known as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part II, the film is now known as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Additionally, Sony Pictures teased more of what to expect from Across the Spider-Verse, which will have 240 characters in it, apparently.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will debut on June 2, 2023, before Beyond the Spider-Verse arrives about a year later on March 29, 2024. Previously, the films were set to be titled Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 and Part II.
2018’s Into the Spider-Verse won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, beating out Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return to direct Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse. They appeared at CinemaCon to discuss Across the Spider-Verse and its sequel, saying Across the Spider-Verse takes place in six universes and featuring 240 characters. The 2018 movie had about 40 characters, for comparison.
“You can’t make a movie that was based on being unique and groundbreaking and then just do the same thing over again,” Miller said, according to AV Club. “So we had to, you know, try and break new ground. And in so it was way bigger, is the largest crew of an animated movie ever.”
Lord added: “The original record was five hundred or so crew members. The first spider has broken with eight hundred. This movie has a thousand people working on it.”
In other news, Sony Pictures just announced El Muerto, a new Spider-Man spinoff starring Bad Bunny.
