The eighth season of the ABB Formula E World Championship has many familiar teams and drivers, but also some newcomers to challenge for the 16-race all-electric, zero-emissions series.

In anticipation of the inaugural Vancouver E-Prix on July 1, here’s a look at the 11 teams and their drivers who began that championship hunt in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia the last weekend of January. Mercedes-EQ driver Nyck de Vries won the first race, while ROKIT’s Edoardo Mortara took the second race of the double-header. Order is in team results from the seventh season.

TEAM: Mercedes-EQ

DRIVERS: Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne

The Mercedes-EQ team edged Jaguar Racing for the team title in a thrilling season-ending race in Berlin, with Dutch driver Nyck de Vries claiming his first-ever Formula E driver’s title despite an eighth-place finish in Berlin. His Belgian teammate Stoffel Vandoorne claimed a podium there (3 rd ) but finished a somewhat disappointing ninth in the driver’s championship. Former Formula 2 champ de Vries has his work cut out for him to repeat but expect the meticulous Mercedes-EQ crew to have both him and Vandoorne at the sharp end of the pack in most races this season. The drivers have been teammates for three years.

TEAM: Jaguar TCS Racing

DRIVERS: Mitch Evans and Sam Bird

The sting of losing the team championship by just four points (181 to 177) no doubt left a scar on the Jaguar team during the off-season, however they can be buoyed by the fact it was the British team’s most successful yet in Formula E. Both drivers were in the hunt for the driver’s title right up to the final race last season, but Mitch Evans’ never had a chance as technical issues saw the New Zealander crash out before the first corner in Berlin, while his English teammate Bird finished a respectable 7 th , considering his start at the back of the grid. Expect both drivers to be in the hunt from the drop of the green flag in Diriyah to the final checkered flag in Seoul on Aug. 14.

TEAM: DS Techeetah

DRIVERS: Antonio Felix da Costa and Jean-Eric Vergne

A third-place team result might delight most teams, but not DS Techeetah, which had its back-to-back team and Driver championship streak stopped last season. They still have the same super-talented pilots — Antonio Felix da Costa of Portugal and Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne and with a new team principal have high hopes, and expectations, of fighting for both team and driver titles. Both drivers have won Formula E driver’s titles — Vergne a double winner — and their seven seasons in the all-electric series give them the experience and hunger to win it all again. As does their disappointing-from-their-standards eighth and 10 th place driver standing results respectively last season.

TEAM: Envision Racing

DRIVERS: Robin Frijns and Nick Cassidy

This combination of team and hots shoes will be intriguing to watch this season, as the Audi-powered Envision cars were at the top of the heap last year from a performance perspective, and they’ll be in the hands of returning rookie Neil Cassidy and two-season vet Robin Frijns. Both are bona fide champions — New Zealander Cassidy won the Super GT title in 2017 and the Super Formula Championship in 2019, while Dutchman Frijns is the 2012 Formula Renault series and won the 2019 Paris E-Prix for Envision — so big things are expected from this first-class privateer team. Frijns finished 5 th  overall last season and then-rookie Cassidy 15 th .

TEAM: Avalanche Andretti Formula E

DRIVERS: Jake Dennis and Oliver Askew

A new team name and a new driver set the stage for this U.S.-based team. Long-time partner BMW i is out and Avalanche is in as a partner to the legendary Andretti name, and American driver Oliver Askew replaces Maximilian Guenther for this campaign. That means a new look for the cars — BMW blue and white being replaced by red — and a new teammate for Brit Jake Dennis, who posted one of the best rookie showings in Formula E last season, including two race wins and a third-place overall. Askew is no slouch either, a former Indy Lights champion who also has experience in IndyCar.

TEAM: ROKiT Venturi Racing

DRIVERS: Edoardo Mortara and Lucas di Grassi

Coming off its best-ever showing in Formula E, Mercedes-powered ROKiT Venturi Racing has arguably the strongest driver duo on the grid. Returning Swiss pilot Edoardo Mortara finished second overall in the driver’s championship last season, and new-to-the-team Lucas di Grassi is the most accomplished driver on the grid. He’s won 12 Formula E races, claimed the driver’s title in 2016-17, has three podiums at Le Mans 24 Hours and drove a season in Formula 1. Putting the Brazilian in their car for this year indicates ROKiT is pulling out all the stops to win titles in 2022.

TEAM: TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team

DRIVERS: Pascal Wehrlein and Andre Lotterer

Lots of German content here as Porsche brings back countryman Pascal Wehrlein and Andre Lotterer for their sophomore Formula E campaign. The rookie season was a decent one, with the team finishing eighth overall — ahead of seasoned teams like Mahindra Racing and Nissan e.dams — and Wehrlein and Lotterer ending up 11 th  and 17 th  respectively in the driver’s championship. If not for a double disqualification for a technical error at one race last year, the duo would have ended up much higher in the standings, and their combined strong second-half of last season bodes well for the team heading into Season 8.

TEAM: Mahindra Racing

DRIVERS: Oliver Rowland and Alexander Sims

The highlight for Mahindra Racing last season was a home soil win for Alex Lynn in London, but he’s out for this go-round, replaced by countryman Oliver Rowland, who drove to a 14 th  driver’s standing with Nissan e.dams last year. Alexander Sims finished a disappointing 19 th  last season for Mahindra, but he had won a race and has several podiums, so things are optimistic at the team. Particularly as Rowland is a qualifying demon and consistently one of the fastest drivers on track.

TEAM: Nissan e.dams

DRIVERS: Maximilian Guenther and Sebastien Buemi

With Oliver Rowland out, German Maximilian Guenther moves over from BMW Andretti Motorsport to join Sebastien Buemi in the Nissan e-dams machines. Last season was a disappointing one for the team and Buemi, with the Swiss driver and one-time series champ falling all the way down to 21 st  in the driver’s standings. The team had a good showing at preseason testing, so expect to see the experienced Franco-Japanese team back near the front where it belongs.

TEAM: Dragon/Penske Autosport

DRIVERS: Sergio Sette Camara and Antonio Giovinazzi

For all intents and purposes, this driver line-up is a rookie pairing. Brazilian Sergio Sette Camara did drive the Dragon car at the final race of last season, though the learning curve proved steep for the Brazilian as he finished at the back of the pack. But as a one-time McLaren F1 test and development driver, he clearly has what it takes to go fast. Italian Antonio Giovinazzi does too, with 62 Formula 1 starts on his resume, however as a rookie in Formula E it will take him some seat time to figure out the nuances of driving an all-electric race car. Dragon scored more points in the two first rounds of last season than the entirety of the previous one, so the two rookies should have cars to match their skill sets.

DRIVERS: Oliver Turvey and Dan Ticktum

With new senior management and an exciting new hot shoe, NIO 333 has big expectation for 2022. Brit and Formula 2 winner Dan Ticktum joins the team as a rookie pairing to veteran Formula E driver and countryman Oliver Turvey, who finished 23 rd  last season and during seven seasons in the series is considered to be underrated. He’ll be up against it with Ticktum in the fold, as the young Englishman is a hard-charger and took part in some of the most entertaining wheel-to-wheel battles in F2 last season.
