Square now offers Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone system to sellers in the U.S. With it, businesses can accept contactless payments directly on their iPhone – no additional hardware required.
Apple launched its new payment method earlier in 2022, and already uses it in its own stores.
Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone available to millions of sellers
Square built its reputation on making devices that enable small businesses to accept credit card payments. But now a reader isn’t necessary to accept contactless payments. All that’s needed is Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone system.
Any Square merchant with a compatible iOS handset can now accept contactless payments by ringing up the sale in the Square POS app then presenting the iPhone to the buyer. The buyer completes the transaction by tapping a contactless payment method such as Apple Pay, another digital wallet or a contactless credit or debit card.
Square has been testing its system with select retailers since June.
“Our young customer base would rather use their digital wallets or contactless cards, and rolling out Tap to Pay on iPhone has helped us meet our shoppers’ preferences with a convenient solution that also brings an air of sophistication to the buying experience,” said Franco Salerno, owner of Warrington, Pennsylvania-based Darianna Bridal & Tuxedo and an Early Access Program participant. “What’s more, given our store’s large footprint, we’ve been able to speed up purchases by bringing the checkout process to wherever our shoppers are.”
Apple’s contactless payment system is designed to keep business’ and customers’ data private and secure. When a payment is processed, Apple doesn’t store card numbers on the device or on Apple servers.
