Yes, it has only got a miserable 85 liters of cargo space behind the rear seats. That is barely enough to accommodate a couple of Pomeranians – not that I’m suggesting you do that, but you get my point. The standard 3-door Suzuki Jimny is not a very practical SUV, despite being so popular among off-roaders and select buyers. You see, the standard Jimny, at just over 3.6 meters long, is not meant to be your typical family SUV. When the Japanese marque was designing it, the Jimny was supposed to be this light and feasible off-roader that could almost anything that larger and more expensive 4x4s could.

Being a Kei car in its home country, the Jimny was meant to be the size that it is today. However, while Suzuki was updating and ‘modernizing’ it, the company realized that this small SUV has potential. With a growing demand for its latest iteration from Europe and Japan (among other markets), the automaker was actually facing production difficulties. Clearly, the Jimny was no longer just a bring-only-Jimny-owners kind of a vehicle – it had a much bigger audience base. On the other hand, certain markets were no longer allowing the Jimny to be sold (ahem, U. S. A) due to stringent emission norms. Despite that, Suzuki was getting inundated with requests for the new Jimny.

This is when the Japanese automaker got in touch with its Maruti contact in India. With loads of room to spare, Maruti could comfortably accommodate more Jimny units than the car could itself accommodate luggage or rear-seat passengers. At the same time, research revealed that there are possible takers for a more practical Jimny in India. However, for this to happen, the company will have to stretch out the outgoing model and slap two extra doors. While initial rumors indicated that Suzuki has simply brushed the idea off, current ones suggest that the automaker is actually sort of keen. Obviously, as with many rumors, this could just be wishful thinking, but the possibility cannot be discounted.

According to a few spy shots, Suzuki is well underway in its tests of a long-wheelbase version of the Jimny. While this could very well be the commercial (cargo-only) variant of the Jimny, this leads to a certain outcome. Maruti had remarked a month or so ago, suggesting that a 5-door Jimny could be coming to India. As you can imagine, this got a lot of us pondering on the real car reaching our shores. After all, the new Jimny is technically a spiritual successor to the outdated but cherished Maruti Gypsy. In its current avatar, the Suzuki Jimny stretches 3,645mm in length and weighs in at just 1.1 tons – that’s cute.

Despite its relatively diminutive size, the Suzuki Jimny has a ground clearance of 210mm. That is more than enough to tackle the horrid roads we face in many parts of our country. Moreover, its miniature G-Wagen-like styling will go down plenty well with most SUV buyers – this could work well for the actual sales of the thing. Moving on, the interior of the 3-door Jimny is pretty compact and there’s no getting away from that.

However, once stretched, Suzuki will add several more millimeters between the axles to relieve some of this compactness. In terms of equipment, the new Jimny gets LED headlamps, keyless entry with push-button start, automatic climate control, cruise control, rear parking sensors, front power windows, and a touch-infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay.

It doesn’t just look like a small G-Wagen, the Suzuki Jimny’s powertrain is equally as modest and well, affordable. Under the hood lies a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that makes a humble 101hp and 130Nm of torque. This unit comes in tandem with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Given the power figures, you won’t be out-dragging anyone off the lights. However, the light mass of the Jimny means that these relatively petite numbers will not affect off-road performance by much. So, here’s hoping that the rumor mills are actually true and that Maruti/Suzuki does indeed bring the Jimny to India.
