Launched earlier this year, the Tata Altroz is doing pretty well on the sales charts. It must be noted here that the Altroz is the most premium hatchback to have ever come from the stables of Tata Motors and it goes on to rival the likes of Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. The Tata Altroz has a starting price of Rs 5.29 lakh (ex-showroom), which makes the base-level XE trim pretty affordable. However, while the XE trim comes across as a pretty competitively priced option, the mid-level XT trim, at Rs 6.84 lakh, is a pretty expensive proposition. However, to make the variant look a better value proposition to buyers, Tata Motors has added automatic climate control with voice commands to this trim.

Initially, the XT trim of the Tata Altroz featured manual controls for the AC, while the climate control was available only on the top-spec XZ and XZ(O) models. Other features that the XT trim of the Tata Altroz comes with include LED DRLs, tilt-adjustable steering wheels, steering wheel-mounted buttons for audio and cruise control, HARMAN-sourced 7-inch infotainment unit with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Google Now functionality, keyless entry & go, push-button start-stop system, auto-folding ORVM, idle start-stop function, et al.

However, in comparison to the high-end XZ and XZ(O) trims, the XT variant of the Tata Altroz misses out on features like diamond-cut 16-inch alloy wheels, height-adjustable driver seat, front and rear seat armrest, one-touch power window (driver side), auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, rear washer and wiper, and contrasting black roof.
At the moment, the Tata Altroz is available with two engine options – a petrol and a diesel. The former is a 1.2-litre unit that has a 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated configuration. It has been borrowed from the Tiago and Tigor. It punches out a maximum power of 86 PS and a peak torque of 113 Nm. On the other hand, the diesel engine on offer is a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged unit that puts out a maximum power of 90 PS and a peak torque of 200 Nm. This engine is a de-tuned version of the Nexon. Both the motors come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Later this year, it seems like the Tata Altroz will get a third engine variant in the form of a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit that will be a de-tuned version of the engine that powers the Nexon. With this, buyers of the petrol Altroz will have a choice to pick up a version with a stronger performance. Also, the new motor will be available with an automatic transmission option.
