, The Audi R8 GT RWD Kicks Up Performance

Audi has unveiled the 2023 R8 GT RWD sports coupe, a limited edition model packing more power and performance than ever before.

In fact, the R8 GT RWD has increased power from 562- to 602-horsepower. Not only does that make it the most powerful rear-wheel drive R8, but the most powerful RWD unit in all of Audi’s history.

The GT RWD is still powered by a 5.2-liter V10, now dispensing 413 lb-ft of torque alongside those 600-plus ponies. Power is delivered to the rear through a new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, said to provide faster shifts than before. On top of that, an altered gear ratio should provide more acceleration in each gear. Adding all that up, expect 0-62 mph runs in 3.4 seconds and, with enough track, a topspeed of 199 mph.

The GT RWD weighs about 44 lbs less than the R8 Coupe Performance RWD. It rides on exclusive 20-inch wheels, said to play a key role in the aforementioned weight reduction, wrapped in Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires. Behind those dubs is a ceramic braking system, also adding to the savings. A new Torque Rear mode manages slippage at the rear axle through the traction control system (ASR). There are seven different levels of slippage, with one being very little and seven allowing the most. It can be dialed in by a control knob on the steering wheel, allowing performance drivers to better tailor their track experience.

Of course, being a limited run model means some exclusive appearance add-ons. For starters, black “R8 GT” scripture is on the rear, matched by black emblems all the way around. A standard Carbon Aerokit adds high gloss fiber across the R8’s front splitter, flics, side skirt covers, rear bumper, diffuser and rear wing; the latter of which touts a gooseneck suspension. All of this was developed in a wind tunnel and helps keep tires to tarmac.

The interior is black and red, paying tribute to the first-generation R8 GT from 2010. The floor mats and bucket seats feature the special model nomenclature in matching colors. For a little extra flair, customers can spot the production number of their R8 GT in the middle of the center console.

Speaking of, the 2023 Audi R8 GT will be limited to just 333 examples worldwide. If this is the last gasp for the internal combustion R8, which is expected to be replaced by an EV speedster, it certainly is going out with a roar. Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date.
