The Mario Movie Has Been Delayed Until Next Year

It’s a-me, not entirely unexpected delay! Yes, the animated Mario movie isn’t going to arrive in December as originally planned.

Did we see this coming? Not exactly, though the fact we’d seen not even a snippet of actor Chris Pratt as Mario did make us wonder. We don’t even know the name of the movie yet, which is also surprising.

Now, as confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto, who helped to create the original Super Mario Bros game, the movie is coming in April. “After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait,” reads his Tweet.

Will it be worth waiting for? We still can’t picture Chris Pratt as Mario and video game movies are typically a mixed bag. But with a character this famous, we’d hope Nintendo’s going to make sure the film is up to scratch. 1993’s Super Mario Bros movie, while not abysmal, deviated from the source material to a considerable degree.

This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

We’ll let you when the first trailer drops but for now, we’ll have to wait to find out just how well the dungaree-clad plumber’s movie fares.
