Dodge’s Charger sedan blends muscle car credentials with a practical four-door sedan. However, the industry is shifting, and the marque is discontinuing the sports sedan. Still, the Charger offers many used model years for potential owners to peruse, albeit with questionable reliability. In fact, TrueCar says the Charger is the most searched used car of 2022.

Is a Dodge Charger a good daily car?

A Dodge Charger is a solid prospect for a daily car due to its versatility, spacious cabin, and usable cargo volume. First, the Mopar sedan offers a library of engines from a Pentastar V6 to a supercharged 6.2L V8. Moreover, the Charger has optional all-wheel drive (AWD) to handle drives in challenging conditions like rain and snow. However, the Charger’s AWD option is only available in the SXT and GT trims from the last few model years.

Also, TrueCar says the most searched used car on their site was the Dodge sedan. They claim the 2006 and newer Charger is a “more practical revival of the storied 1960s and ’70s muscle-car nameplate.” Moreover, the Charger’s Mercedes-derived platform has been around for years, providing fans with an affordable used car option.

Are Dodge Chargers good on gas?

A Dodge Charger SXT or GT with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 manages around 19 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. However, unlike Toyota Avalon Hybrid, the lineup doesn’t include a smaller displacement engine or hybridized variant. Instead, the Dodge sedan offers thirstier V8s at higher trim levels.

For instance, the Dodge Charger R/T packs a 370 horsepower 5.7L Hemi V8. However, the result of that extra power is 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Moreover, the R/T Scat Packs and SRT Hellcat variations are even more gluttonous. For example, the 2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody manages as little as 12 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.

Are used Dodge Chargers reliable?

A used Dodge Charger is reliable, but it’s not up to the standard of some of its competition. According to RepairPal, a 2022 Dodge Charger gets a 3.5 out of 5.0 for reliability. That puts the Dodge sedan in 10th out of 12 large cars that RepairPal evaluated. Moreover, the Charger’s scores put it just behind the average score of 4.0 points for large car reliability.

According to the reliability figures, the Charger’s typical repairs are “severe,” but they are more infrequent than with some competitors. As a result, RepairPal says significant repairs are uncommon for the model. That reliability contributes to why used car shoppers searched for the Dodge Charger so much in 2022.

Why is Dodge canceling the Charger?

Even though the Dodge Charger is the most searched used vehicle model on TrueCar for 2022, the marque is discontinuing the Charger. Specifically, Dodge is canceling the Charger and Challenger to make way for the next generation of vehicles. For instance, the marque’s new Daytona SRT EV concept is an indication that Dodge and other Stellantis companies will be leaning into hybridization and electrification for the next generation of vehicles.

Unfortunately, that means the end of the familiar Charger model. Before the last Chargers roll off the assembly line, the automaker is producing some “Last Call” models to celebrate the vehicles. Still, there are plenty of used car options for fans who still want a piece of the Dodge Charger.
