Ready for another #TheSteamSix feature? We sure are, and today’s feature is all about JRPGs!

JRPG stands for Japanese role-playing games, and if the name is not a dead giveaway still, these are games are designed and produced in Japan. If you’ve yet to try playing a JRPG or you’re looking for a new one to occupy your time, here are six JRPGs you can find on Steam:

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

If you count the “Dragon Ball” anime as one of your favorites growing up, then you might want to check out Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Why? This JRPG is actually based on the events of the anime and features its events and storylines.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was released in 2020 and, like the anime, follows the adventures of main protagonist Goku and the Z-Fighters. You can check out the game on Steam.

Monster Hunter Rise

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise is one of the newest JRPGs released as of press time. The game is the sixth mainline game in the Monster Hunter series and, like the previous titles, puts the player in the role of a Hunter whose job is to either capture or kill monsters.

Those familiar with Monster Hunter: World will recognize many aspects of the game that has been implemented in Monster Hunter Rise, including weapon types and the seamless map approach.

Nier:Automata

If you liked the 2010 game Nier, then you should check out its sequel, Nier:Automata. Released in 2017, the game is developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix.

Nier:Automata follows the story of androids 2B, 9S, and A2 as they navigate a ward between androids created by humans and machines created by aliens. You can check out the game on Steam.

Persona 5 Royal

Released in Japan in 2019 and in the rest of the world in 2020, Persona 5 Royal is essentially Persona 5 but with additional content. The story of the game follows a high school student known simply as Joker as he transfers to a new school and becomes part of a secret group of vigilantes.

The new content featured in Persona 5 Royal includes two new characters, character costume sets, a new area of the city called Kichijoji, and new music.

Tales of Arise

The 17th game in the Tales series, Tales of Arise was released in 2021 on multiple platforms following a delay in its original 2020 release date. If you played Tales of Graces, which was released in 2009, Tales of Arise features the same evasion and countering system as the former, according to a report by IGN.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Looking for something different from the Yakuza franchise? Yakuza: Like a Dragon is right up your alley because it is actually the first turn-based RPG in the series. It also does not feature Kazuma Kiryu as its main protagonist. Instead, players are introduced to Ichiban Kasuga.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is also known as the last game in the franchise to use the Yakuza name outside Japan. You can check out the game on Steam.
