TikTok’s algorithm for the ‘For You’ page might not be a mystery anymore. The short video platform is releasing a new feature that explains to users why a particular video will show up on the page, bringing more transparency.
The new feature will allow users to understand the reasons behind video recommendations by tapping on the share panel and selecting the question mark icon labelled “Why this video.” TikTok will then show a list of ‘WHYs’ that played a role in the suggestion.

“This feature is one of many ways we’re working to bring meaningful transparency to the people who use our platform and build on several steps we’ve taken towards that goal,” the company stated in a blog post. “Looking ahead, we’ll continue to expand this feature to bring more granularity and transparency to content recommendations.”
TikTok might as well clear the growing concerns of the US government over its algorithm by releasing the feature. The Chinese government alleged manipulating the algorithm to achieve its geopolitical goals in the United States, so it is time to prove that they’re not?
