Haven't ordered one yet? It could be too late.

It’s almost time. The Mercedes-AMG GT coupe and roadster have thrilled us since the 2015 model year but all good things must come to an end. As expected, production is ending very soon. According to Spain’s Motor.es, this is set to happen in December, though no specific date has been confirmed as of yet. Furthermore, the order books have been closed since October. Again, the German automaker has not gone on record to confirm any of this but the timing makes sense.

Both variants are showing their age inside and out. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 powerplant lacks electrification and, therefore, will soon have difficulty meeting new emissions standards.

Perhaps the biggest clue so far was the July 2020 introduction of the 720 horsepower AMG GT Black Series. Typically, a Black Series is the ultimate culmination of an AMG vehicle. The GT’s immediate predecessor, SLS AMG, also received the Black Series treatment just prior to its 2014 retirement.

If you haven’t placed an order for any of the GT variants, then you’ll have to contend with what’s still sitting unsold on dealer lots. There’s also the used market. Perhaps the best alternative is patience. The good folks at Affalterbach are said to be hard at work on a successor.

Details remain scarce but it's safe to assume it'll have a plug-in hybrid powertrain rather than a pure battery-electric setup. But unlike the SLS AMG and AMG GT, this third-generation model isn't expected to offer a roadster body style.

The soon-to-be-revealed next-gen SL roadster will fill the slot on its own. It makes no sense for AMG to offer two very similar roadsters, especially since the new SL will be developed by AMG, built on the same platform as the new AMG GT, and have an edgier attitude. The new SL could debut before the end of the year. So, when will the AMG GT coupe successor arrive? Chances are we'll have to wait at least until the 2023 model year, but a reveal could happen before the middle of 2022.
