The beauty of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Most automakers are laser focused on electric vehicles and what we need to make them a part of our lives. Toyota, who’s been a little behind on the tech after pioneering hybrids with the Prius, is now taking two routes towards a cleaner electric future: electricity and hydrogen.

The good-looking 2021 Toyota Mirai is its main hydrogen entry, and the sedan just grabbed its first Guinness World Record by traveling 845 miles on a single tank of fuel. Toyota emphasizes that it took just a 5-minute fillup to get all of that range, which is more than most traditional gasoline vehicles, by far.

“In 2016, the Toyota Mirai was the first production fuel cell electric vehicle available for retail sale in North America, and now the next generation Mirai is setting distance records,” said Bob Carter, executive vice president, Toyota Motor North America. “We are proud to be leaders of this exciting technology, which is just one of a growing lineup of zero emission vehicles in our portfolio.”

The trip took place August 23 and 24, with the Mirai returning 152 mpge over the trip. It was validated by Michael Empric, who sealed the Mirai’s tank at the beginning of the journey. “Professional hypermiler” Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger were the drivers for the trip, which started at the Toyota Technical Center in Gardena, California.

The roads took them to San Ysidro and then to Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and Malibu along the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway. The returned to homebase, logging 473 miles. The next day they woke up and pushed through morning and afternoon rush hour traffic in San Diego, LA and Orange County, “coasting into TTC with a grand total of 845 miles driven.”

“As a Guinness World Records adjudicator for 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to witness incredible attempts, including several distance-related feats,” said Empric. “The Toyota Mirai’s journey without the need to refuel showcases the power of fuel cell electric technology. This technology and the design ingenuity by the team at Toyota led to a history-making moment.”
