The Volkswagen brand delivered around 330,000 electric cars in 2022, 23.6 per cent more than in the previous year. With a total of around 4.56 million vehicles sold in 2022, the BEV share was therefore around 7.2 per cent. The best-selling electric VW worldwide and in their home market was the ID.4.

These are only the electric vehicle deliveries of the Volkswagen brand, not yet those of the group with the BEV sales of Skoda, Seat/Cupra, Audi, Porsche and the commercial vehicle brands. These are to follow in the coming days.

The 4.56 million VW cars delivered across all powertrains represents a 6.8 per cent drop compared to 2021, which the company attributed to the “tight supply situation”. With 330,000 deliveries, battery-electric cars were up 23.6 per cent compared to the 263,000 BEVs in 2021 (with a 5.4 per cent share). Volkswagen no longer reports plug-in hybrids separately in the press release; the focus is on battery-electric cars.

VW’s best-selling electric model worldwide last year was the ID.4 with around 170,000 units delivered. The core brand has not yet provided the figures for other ID. models. In the Group’s communication on sales figures, the figures for other models have been mentioned so far – and also for the fourth quarter. Here, the core brand also does not give any information. However, based on the known figures from the first three quarters, the VW brand should have delivered 122,900 BEVs worldwide in the fourth quarter – a record for the Wolfsburg-based company, but not mentioned in the release.

In China, VW could more than double the delivery of fully electric vehicles of the ID. Family: 143,100 units of the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.6 models were sold there in 2022 (+102.9 per cent). Sales in North America also increased significantly: the company sold a total of 22,700 ID.4s here (+27.7 percent). In the meantime, the variant built at the US plant in Chattanooga is delivered there – and no longer ID.4s imported from Zwickau as in the beginning.

“We achieved a solid sales result in 2022 despite persistent supply bottlenecks. The pronounced growth in BEV models confirms that with our attractive product portfolio, we are on the right track to becoming the most desirable brand for sustainable mobility,” says Imelda Labbé, Executive Vice President Sales, Marketing and After Sales.

The brand confirms that ten new electric models will be launched by 2026. Among them will be not only the production version of the ID.7, which was teased at CES, but also an “entry-level electric car with a target price of under 25,000 euros”. The new electric vehicle models until 2026 will largely be based on a revised version of the current MEB, called MEB+. This is to enable ranges of up to 700 kilometres and up to 200 kW charging power. Among other things, a visually independent electric SUV the size of an ID.3 has been promised.
