The Gauteng Traffic Police said a 26-year-old suspect has been arrested for allegedly driving the blue BMW that was seen performing reckless and dangerous wheel spinning moves on a Johannesburg highway in a video that went viral on social media last week.

TRAFFIC POLICE ARREST ALLEGED RECKLESS DRIVER

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said the National Traffic Police was briefed about the car spinning incident on the N3 Highway in Johannesburg shortly after the video went viral on Friday, 10 September. “[I]nvestigations will begin to trace the culprit. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE [RTMC’s emphasis].”

On Monday, 13 September, the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) announced that a suspect was found and arrested after the individual who is registered as the owner of the blue BMW vehicle seen in the video led them to the suspect.

The 26-year-old individual who was allegedly driving the car in the video was arrested in the presence of their legal representation and the South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently processing the matter. The GTP said the suspect will be charged accordingly but did not disclose what the charges would be.

“This offender can be arrested for reckless and negligent driving, and dragging or spinning vehicle’s wheels on a public road,” said Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar after the video surfaced on Friday.
