The Porsche 718 GT4 RS is over 20 seconds faster than the regular GT4 around the Nurburgring.

The Porsche 718 GT4 is already a very capable sports car, but that hasn’t stopped Porsche from working on a hardcore RS version. This will be the first time the 718 Cayman has had the RS treatment. We’ve seen spy shots of prototypes over the years, and now Porsche has finally shared the first official photos and videos of the 718 GT4 RS in action ripping up the Nurburgring, where it set a blisteringly fast lap time during final testing.

With development driver Jorg Bergmeister behind the wheel, the Porsche 718 GT4 RS lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in just seven minutes and 9.3 seconds. It also completed the shorter configuration in seven minutes and 4.5 seconds. Incredibly, this was 23.6 seconds faster than its 718 Cayman GT4 sibling, which is no small feat.

For safety, the 718 GT4 RS prototype was fitted with a racing seat to protect the driver, but this was the only modification. It was also equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, which will be optionally available.

The hardcore Porsche 718 Cayman will follow the typical RS recipe, so expect it to be faster, lighter, and more aerodynamic. Compared to the regular GT4, the RS has a prominent swan-neck rear wing, a vented hood, and air outlets on the front fenders to improve the airflow. Porsche hasn't revealed any technical details, but the GT4 RS will be powered by a 4.0-liter flat-six expected to generate around 450 hp, up from 414 hp in the regular GT4.

“During development, we gave the 718 Cayman GT4 RS everything that characterizes a genuine RS: lightweight construction, more downforce, more power and, of course, an even higher level of responsiveness and feedback to driver inputs,” said Andreas Preuninger, Director of the GT Model Line.

“The fantastic lap time of the Nordschleife is impressive proof of how clearly noticeable these improvements in driving dynamics are. Our customers can look forward to a pure driver's car that makes a thrilling driving experience an absolute priority.”

“The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is an uncompromising driving machine. It feels as nimble as a go-kart on mountain roads, yet is impressively stable and well-balanced on the racetrack. Otherwise, such a lap time wouldn't even be possible,” driver Jrg Bergmeister, who has spent over 500 hours behind the wheel of the GT4 RS during development. “The GT4 RS is one of the sharpest cars Porsche has ever developed. And you really have had to experience the breathtaking noise it makes for yourself.”

This has the potential to be one of Porsche's best driver's cars yet. Fortunately, we don't have to wait much longer for the official reveal: Porsche has confirmed the first-ever 718 GT4 RS will debut this November.
