Mission Majnu, directed by Shantanu Bagchi, follows a slew of similar films defined by chest-thumping nationalism and set during a particularly polarized period in India’s history. Mission Majnu, an action-thriller starring Sidharth Malhotra and Rashmika Mandanna, was originally slated for a theatrical release before being picked up by Netflix. It appears to be the latest in a new wave of nationalist-minded Indian films in which Pakistan is almost always the enemy.
Malhotra plays Amandeep Singh, an R&AW (Research and Analysis Wing) agent sent to Pakistan to gather intelligence on the development of a nuclear device. Amandeep goes undercover as a handyman and finally falls in love with a Pakistani woman named Nasreen (Mandanna). Amandeep’s resolve is tested against the backdrop of a rising 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, as he is torn between his commitment to his country and his love for Nasreen. By the way, “Majnu” is the Latin equivalent of “Romeo.”
