The Type S was appropriately finished in Long Beach Blue Pearl paint.

Acura is waving goodbye to the capable second-generation NSX in fine style with the NSX Type S. Revealed in August, it's more powerful and quicker around a track too. Acura claimed that it could lap Japan's Suzuka race circuit two seconds faster than the normal NSX. Now, the Type S has proven its mettle once more by setting a new production vehicle record on the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach race circuit. This time, the new Type S was nearly three seconds quicker than a 2019 NSX that tackled the same circuit. The official time for the new NSX Type S was 1:32.784, beating the 2019 NSX's time of 1:35.663.

The record-breaking NSX Type S, appropriately finished in Long Beach Blue Pearl, was driven by Acura race car driver and defending IMSA champion Ricky Taylor.

“Long Beach is such a fun track, but definitely challenging with so little margin for error,” said Taylor. “Thankfully, the new Acura NSX Type S is not only crazy fast, it’s also remarkably easy to control at the limit. It’s a very special car and perfectly suited for a track like this.”

Acura fans agree that the Type S is a special car which helps explain why it sold out in just a couple of hours. Of the 350 Type S models that will be manufactured globally, 300 will be reserved for the American market.

Acura’s changes to the NSX Type S have made it faster than the regular model, both in a straight line and through the twisties. The twin-turbo V6 with hybrid assistance produces 600 horsepower and 492 lb-ft of torque, increases of 27 hp and 16 lb-ft over the standard car. What really benefits the supercar on the track are 50% faster upshifts from the nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox, a wider track, and an increase in lateral grip. The aerodynamic tweaks include an NSX GT3-inspired rear diffuser. Clearly, these changes have made all the difference and the new production car record in California is another feather in the cap of this brilliant supercar.
