NEW DELHI: 5G wireless transport solutions provider Ceragon said it has received follow-on orders from tier-1 telcos in India, totaling over $35 million in Q2 as telcos prepare for the fifth-generation network rollout expected in 2022.
“With 5G auctions planned for the first half of 2022, mobile operators in India are taking swift action and preparing their networks to be 5G-ready. Ceragon is excited to be an integral part of India’s 5G evolution,” said Doron Arazi, CEO of Ceragon Networks.
“In fact, Ceragon has been selected to participate in field trials in India that aim to connect 5G sites using Ceragon’s ultra-high mmW frequency technology, which is considered ideal for high-speed 5G services,” Arazi added.
As per the company, the spectrum auction conducted in March, the Covid-19 pandemic that necessitated work-from-home and study-from-home practices, as well as, preparations to support 5G roll out served as the driving factors for operators to expand their networks.
To be sure, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) netted Rs 77,814.40 crore from the 4G spectrum auctions that lasted two days, The total quantity of spectrum for which telcos acquired the right to use is 855.60 MHz.
DoT had said that bidding took place for spectrum in 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2300 MHz bands, sans 700 MHz and 2500 MHz bands.
The DoT recently allocated 5G trial spectrum in the 3500 MHz, 28 GHz, and 700 MHz bands to Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea to allow them to develop India-relevant use cases.
To begin with, Airtel and its Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia switched on their 5G field trial network in Mumbai’s Phoenix Mall in Lower Parel and will soon begin a similar trial in Kolkata, ET reported recently.
The Sunil Mittal-led telco is conducting the trial in the 3500 MHz band using 5G gear from Nokia.
Vodafone Idea, India’s third-largest telecom operator, had also started 5G trials in Pune and Gandhinagar in partnership with European vendors Ericsson and Nokia, as per the managing director and CEO Ravinder Takkar
Reliance Jio, the telecom market leader had also kicked off its 5G trials in Navi Mumbai to test its homegrown 5G technology.
