MG has revealed to CarsGuide that the entire range of its HS mid-size SUV, including the plug-in hybrid, will be updated and arrive in dealerships this year.
“We can confirm that there will be an update for the entire HS range this year, and it is currently slated for the second half of 2023,” an MG Motor Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide.
This will be the first significant update for the HS which arrived in Australia in February 2020 to take on the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage and Subaru Forester.
New versions of the HS have launched in other markets, but Australians can expect our new MG HS to adopt much of the same styling as the Thai model, which has a more modern and premium look than the outgoing Aussie HS.
There’s the new face with its enormous, low and wide grille, flanked by chunky air intakes and redesigned fog lights. The headlights and tail-lights are restyled and fully LED now as well.
We can also expect newly designed 17-inch wheels on the petrol variants and fresh 18-inch alloys on the plug-in hybrid.
The cabin design of Thailand’s new HS appears to have stayed much the same as the current Australian model keeping the design for the centre console, air vents, steering wheel and seats.
In-car tech also appears unchanged with the Thai models sporting the same 10.1-inch media touchscreen and a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster found on the higher grades as the current local version.
As for the powerplants, we’re not expecting these to change either. The HS is likely to continue to offer a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle along with choice of two four-cylinder petrol variants: the 1.5-litre for front-wheel-drive models and the 2.0-litre for all-wheel-drives.
Pricing and full specifications will be announced closer to the new MG HS’s Australian launch, but the current model kicks off with a list price of $31,990 for the entry-grade Vibe and tops out at $52,690 for HS +EV in the Essence guise.
The HS +EV is not a fully electric version of the HS, it’s a plug-in hybrid with a petrol engine and an electric motor.
MG does offer a fully electric SUV – it’s the ZS EV and with its $44,990 price tag, it’s the most affordable EV on the market right now.
