We didn't think these would really happen

A couple of weeks ago we reported on a crazy new concept wearable from Huawei – the Huawei Watch Buds.

Or at least we thought it was a concept. The smartwatch, which housed a pair of true wireless stereo earbuds inside, was officially launched by Huawei. And there are even more surprises inside.

The key design feature is the magnetic Flip Cover, which lifts the screen to reveal the headphones inside.

But now we know more about the smartwatch itself. It has a 47mm case size, and a 1.47-inch circular AMOLED with a 466 x 466-pixel resolution.

Revealed: Upcoming smartwatches to get excited about

The earbuds themselves use a bullet design, but they’re not short on power either. Surprisingly, they feature active noise cancellation on-board, IP54 splash-proof design, and ‘real-time hearing optimization’, which could be used for those with hearing difficulties.

And the smartwatch has a few tricks up its sleeve too. Despite housing the earbuds, it also finds space for a heart rate monitor, SpO2 sensor, ECG, and atrial fibrillation features.

In our original report, we questioned the battery life of the Huawei Watch Buds, given the pressures of keeping a pair of TWS headphones juiced up. Huawei states 3 days of battery life – although heavy use scenarios on Huawei devices are usually way short of estimates – so it will be interesting to see how that plays out here.

These buds are only slated to be launched in China for now – and we’d guess that a wider launch will be heavily based on its success in Huawei’s homeland.

It will go on sale for CNY 2,988 (which is around $429).
