The very first Pixel smartphone was launched in 2016. Thus, Google has been in the smartphone business for 6 years. But during this period of time, the Alphabet company managed to sell only 27.6 million units. Thus, there is a significant gap between this brand and the market leader, Samsung. According to a Bloomberg reporter @vladsavov, Google needs more than 60 years to catch up with Samsung Galaxy phone sales over a 12-month period.

Since Google launched Pixel phones in 2016, it's sold 27.6 million units. That's 1/10 of Samsung's 2021 sales. In other words, Google would need 60 years to sell as many phones as Samsung sells in one.

Google Pixel Is Still No Competitor To Samsung Galaxy…Maybe In 60 Years, It Will Be

As IDC reported, Google has managed to sell 27.6 million Pixel phones since launching the series in 2016. This is equivalent to 1/10 of Samsung’s smartphone sales in a year (2021). So simple calculations show that Google will need more than 60 years to sell as many smartphones as Samsung does in a single year. We are even not talking about the sales pace that might speed up.

However, it’s naïve to blame Google for ineffective business. We mean Samsung has been in the market for ages, while Google is a newbie. So Google still needs some time to build a huge global retail network. If not, the Pixel series will never threaten Samsung’s mobile business.

The same is true for smartwatches powered by Google’s Wear OS. For nearly a year, Samsung has held exclusive rights to the latest OS version for wearables. As a result, Samsung has the largest Wear OS 3 market share. By the way, Google will release its first Pixel Watch smartwatch. However, it may encounter the same competition problems to catch up with Galaxy Watch sales.
