Want to change the volume quickly? You can change or control the volume with your mouse scroll wheel. Here’s how.

Changing volume in Windows is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is, click the Volume icon on the taskbar and move the slider left or right to increase or decrease volume.

Though the default way is easy, won’t it be nice to control the volume in Windows using the mouse wheel? For instance, while watching a YouTube video, rather than using the volume slider in the player or on the taskbar, you can simply scroll the mouse wheel to change the volume. As you can guess, it is much easier and more intuitive.

The good thing is it is pretty easy to configure Windows to change the volume on mouse wheel movement. So, without further ado, let me show you how to control Windows volume with the mouse screen wheel.

How to control volume with the mouse scroll wheel

Windows has no built-in option to do what we are looking to do. The good thing is that we can use a free software called Volumouse to control the volume with the mouse wheel in Windows. Let me show you how.

  1. Get Volumouse from the official website.
  2. Extract the zip file to a folder.
  3. Open the extracted folder.
  4. Double-click the EXE file.
  5. Select your sound output device from the “Mixer Device” dropdown.
  6. Choose a modifier from the first “Use the when when” dropdown.
  7. Select the “Load Volumouse at startup” checkbox.
  8. Press the “Ok” button.
  9. From now, press the modifier and move the mouse wheel to control the volume.
  10. With that, you’ve configured the mouse wheel volume control.

Steps with more details:

First, go to the Volumouse developer website and download the zip file. After downloading, unzip the file to a folder. Open the extracted folder and double-click the Volumouse exe program.

After opening the application, the first thing to do is select the output device. So, choose the sound output device from the “Mixer Device” dropdown menu.

Following that, choose a modifier key to use with the mouse wheel. That way, you don’t inadvertently change the system volume when scrolling a folder or webpage. So, choose a modifier from the first “Use the wheel when” dropdown menu. I selected “Alt key is down.”

You can set many rules for the same action if necessary. Select another modifier from another “Use the wheel when” selection option. For example, I chose the “Right mouse button is down” option from the second dropdown menu.

Next, select the “Load Volumouse at startup” checkbox. That way, the application starts with Windows, and you don’t miss the functionality.

Finally, press the “Ok” button to save your changes.

From now on, press the modifier key and scroll the mouse wheel to change the volume. For example, I can press and hold the Alt key or Right mouse button and scroll the mouse wheel to control Windows volume.

Optional customizations

Volumouse is simple to set up and use. However, the application provides a plethora of customization options to allow you to make it behave exactly how you want. You can, for example, create a combination that only works in one program, make a custom key combination, adjust the left/right balance, change the appearance of the volume slider, and more.

If there is one modification I would recommend, it is how the volume indicator appears on the screen when you change the volume. To do so, launch Volumouse and click the “More” button next to the Wheel Mouse Rule of your choice.

Next, under the “Indicator Options” section, select “Vertical TrackBar” or “Horizontal TrackBar” from the “Type” dropdown option. To save your changes, click the “Ok” button.

That is all. It is that simple to control the volume with the mouse scroll wheel.

I hope this simple and easy Windows how-to guide helped you.
