Is it too quiet for Corvette fanatics?

The wait for the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C8 is almost over. The new Z06 will debut on October 26 with a more powerful flat-plane crankshaft 5.5-liter V8 from the C8.R race car and more aggressive styling than the C8 Corvette Stingray. But this isn't the only new Corvette variant Chevrolet is working on.

With its mid-engine layout, the C8 Corvette is already breaking new ground. In another first, a plug-in hybrid version called the E-Ray will also join the C8 Corvette family – and this could be our first look at it in action.

Caught on video by CarSpyMedia, a camouflaged prototype of the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray appears to have been spied alongside a Z06 on the outskirts of the Nurburgring. While we can’t verify the car’s identity, there are some visual changes that set it apart. Intriguingly, the prototype combines design elements from the Corvette Z06 with a rear bumper from the Stingray, which incorporates dual exhaust tips.

However, the biggest giveaway that this Corvette is electrified is the lack of engine noise. Usually, however, prototypes with electrified engines are distinguished with yellow stickers on the camouflage, but that's not the case here. We get to see the mysterious prototype drive silently around the Nurburgring’s surrounding roads at low speed in contrast to the loud, V8-powered Z06 following behind.

According to rumors, the Corvette E-Ray will be powered by a 6.2-liter V8 paired with an electric motor on the front axle. Combined, this setup is expected to produce between 600 and 650 horsepower. This will also be the first all-wheel-drive Corvette, allegedly enabling the E-Ray to hit 0-60 mph in around two seconds.

As the video shows, the Corvette E-Ray plug-in hybrid will also run on pure electric power at speeds between 20-35 mph according to reports. Pricing will reportedly start at under $100,000, slotting the E-Ray above the Stingray and below the Z06. Sales are expected to kick off in 2023, so the E-Ray will likely debut next year after the Z06.
