According to an official statement released by Microsoft, the company will no longer be selling licenses for Windows 10 to consumers as of the end of this month, January 31, 2023. This decision applies to all versions of Windows 10, including Home, Pro, and Workstation. The notice was posted on the Windows 10 Home, Pro, and Workstation pages and it states that digital downloads of the operating system will be halted on the last day of this month. This move marks a significant change in the way Microsoft will be distributing its operating system in the future. It is likely that the company will now focus more on the enterprise market and Windows as a service model.

What does this Mean for You?

As of January 31, 2023, Microsoft will no longer be selling licenses for its popular operating system, Windows 10, to consumers. This means that individuals will no longer be able to purchase and download the software directly from the company. However, those who already have a valid license will still be able to use and receive updates for their current Windows 10 copy. Those who already have a Windows 10 license will still receive security updates to protect their device from malware, spyware, and viruses until October 14, 2025.

In addition to this, it should be noted that the official sale of Windows 10 licenses through Microsoft will be ending this month. However, consumers will still have the option to purchase the operating system through other means, such as through third-party retailers and vendors.

What Are The Options You are Left With?

First of all, if you are using a Windows 10 Home or Pro edition on your PC/Laptop you need not worry at all. Microsoft officials have stated that it will provide all the security updates and support until October 14, 2025. So, we have more than two years till it goes officially off the board.

Microsoft released Windows 11 on 5 October 2021 and several people are using it right now. In fact, according to Statcounter, till December 2022, Windows 11 holds a significant market share at 16.97%.

And secondly, if you want. You can also upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Which is absolutely free.

Important Note: But if you’re still using Windows 8 or 8.1 you can’t upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware restrictions. Because the hardware of Windows 8/8.1 devices won’t support Windows 11.

Final Word on Microsoft Will End Sale of Windows 10 Licenses to Consumers This Month

In a nutshell, don’t panic because we have more than two years (till October 14, 2025) until Windows 10 goes extinct. As I just mentioned above, you can also upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, which is completely free.
