It is not a secret that electric vehicles are slowly but surely taking over the automotive market. With many big names in the industry set to release electric models in the next few years, it is only a matter of time before EVs become the norm. However, electric trucks are still a rarity on the road. In fact, out of all the EV models currently available, only two have driving ranges over 300 miles: the GMC Hummer EV and the Rivian R1T.

Future electric pickup trucks

Pickup trucks are some of the most popular vehicles in the United States. As such, it is no surprise that many truck manufacturers are looking to develop electric models to appeal to both eco-conscious and budget-minded consumers. Some of the most anticipated electric trucks set to hit the market in the next few years include:

In November 2022, Ram unveiled the brand’s newly redefined full-size BEV pickup truck concept, featuring the all-new Ram 1500 EV. The truck will feature a double-cab configuration riding on an STLA Frame and towing capacity of over 10,000 pounds. Additionally, the 1500 EV will offer 500 miles of range on a single charge, outperforming its rivals by over 200 miles.

Chevrolet Silverado EV

Initially referred to as the Chevrolet BET Truck, the Silverado EV is the brand’s first all-electric pickup truck. The Silverado EV is set to offer DC fast charging up to 350 kW, allowing the truck to regain around 100 miles in just 15 minutes. Like its competitor Ford F-150 Lightning, the Silverado EV will likely pair a dual-motor electric powertrain with an advanced four-wheel drive system.

GMC Sierra EV

GMC’s all-electric pickup truck, Sierra EV is set to offer different powertrains and battery packs with multiple configurations. It is expected to provide a maximum towing capacity of over 9,500 pounds and a driving range of over 400 miles. Under the hood, the truck’s first edition trim (the Denali EV) will likely feature a potent powertrain that delivers up to 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque.

Volkswagen Scout

Volkswagen’s first electric pickup truck, the Scout, is set to make its debut in 2023. According to Reuters, Volkswagen Group AG said, the designing, engineering, and manufacturing of Scout models will be carried out by U.S. Scout Motors, a new EV-dedicated subsidiary.

The teaser image of the truck hints at a boxy design with a longer wheelbase compared to the company’s scout electric SUV. Details are still a little murky, but production is scheduled to start in 2024 with an annual volume of 50,000 units.

GMC Hummer EV

After a long hiatus, the GMC Hummer is finally back and better than ever. The all-new Hummer EV will first debut as a GMC EV pickup truck model before eventually being offered as an SUV.

As the most anticipated EV truck of the year, the Hummer EV is set to provide a whopping 1,000 horsepower, with all-wheel drive being standard. When it comes to range, the EV will have no problem going the distance, with an estimated driving range of over 330 miles.

It will only take 10 minutes to charge the EV to 100 miles with a DC fast charger, a feature that will come in handy on long road trips.

Rivian R1T

Despite Tesla being the first automaker to promise electric trucks with its Cybertruck mass production is delayed until the end of 2023, according to Autonews. Luckily Rivian has lived up to the hype and delivered with a faster turnaround time.

The R1T will come in two options: a quad motor layout featuring a single motor for each wheel and the dual-motor AWD setup featuring one electric motor on the front axle and one on the rear. Rivian claims that the R1T will have a driving range of over 400 miles with the dual-motor setup and a 0 to 60 mph time of just three seconds. By the end of 2023, there are plans to have a 3500-plus DC fast-charging network in 600 cities.
