Along with IT-OT integration arising from fast development of Industry 4.0-based smart manufacturing, RFID sensors have been widely used in manufacturing processes for real-time tracking of assets, workers, control of processes at production lines and management of supply chains, according to Taiwan sales & operations director Mike Ouyang for Germany-based Balluff.

A lot of labor was used to record data at production lines in the past, with relatively low accuracy and efficiency, Ouyang said.

For CNC machines, cutters management used to be a headache, because they were a consumable resource and key to cost control, and manual recording their use required much labor and time, Ouyang noted. Manual recording usually led to problems including mistaken places of using cutters, losses of cutters and difficulty of predicting their service lives, Ouyang indicated.

RFID sensors can help much in cutters management through collecting real-time operating data on cutters, Ouyang said, adding production managers will know whether cutters are used in right places, their conditions, cumulative operating time and time for replacements, Ouyang explained.

RFID sensors can also help in upgrading electric vehicle (EV) production lines, Ouyang noted. As production of EV-use lithium batteries involves more than 30 manufacturing procedures and such batteries vary in specifications, RFID technology can track components and manufacturing procedures to ensure correct manufacturing processes, Ouyang indicated.

Besides, RFID technology has been increasingly used in automobile assembly with complicated manufacturing procedures, Ouyang said.
