Spotted by Thai automotive publication, Headlight Mag, the white Hilux is covered in black tape across the front bumper and on the wider wheelarches. This combo gives the world’s most popular Japanese pick-up truck a menacing stance especially when you see one barrelling on the highway.

Though the grille is covered, we can see that Toyota might be inspired by the TRD Pro Tacoma and 4Runner with a hexagonal honeycomb design. Perhaps this buff Hilux might also see the ‘TOYOTA’ script written in full on the front in place of the ellipse logo.

All sorts of branding are taped up on the Hilux and in the rear quarter shot, we see a clearer view of those wide overfenders. Though it’s not very clear from these shots, the beefy Hilux seems to feature chunkier off-road tyres.

However, there is already a meaty Toyota Hilux on sale now albeit down under. The upgraded Australian-spec Hilux Rogue that went on sale in October received significant mechanical changes including a wider track, higher ride height, as well as newer suspension and brakes.

Despite those enhancements, the Hilux Rogue still looks like any standard Hilux. It may be invincible, but it lacks any intimidation like the Ranger Raptor.

The Aussie-spec Hilux Rogue’s ride height increased by approximately 20 mm while the front and rear tracks increased by around 140 mm. The rear axle has also been lengthened and as such, the rear dampers are moved towards the wheels.

The updated Hilux Rogue also features a rear stabiliser bar, 18-inch alloy wheels, and rear ventilated disc brakes. It is powered by a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel that makes 204 PS/500 Nm and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

This is also the same engine that is on the Hilux GR Sport which was just launched in Indonesia last week. With Toyota looking to launch a rival to the revolutionary Ranger Raptor, can the Hilux gain some extra meat to churn out its competitor?
